I'm sure this has been discussed on here 1000 times but in the market for a new laptop. All I really need is something to run Microsoft Office and the Internet quickly and efficiently. Most of my storage needs are for quotes on Excel and PDFs and training videos and Powerpoints. I've so far looked into a Lenovo yoga and Dell spa 12/13. Not looking to break the bank or get a super computer. Any advice and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

yep a million times.

the biggest question; do you *HAVE* to have MSFT office or do you just want doc/spreadsheet/pdf/presentation capabilities?

if you just want to edit documents & browse the web, a $150 chromebook will do what you want and then-some and it won't break the bank and you won't have to charge your battery every 2 hours.

Out of comfortability I would like to have Office. We do all our quoting in Excel and like the format of outlook, since I email 200 times a day or so, also not sure if it matters but we are set up with 1and1 account for outlook.

Somebody posted the other day about this deal at newegg. I recommended it to my nephew who snapped one up. It's a $1400 computer for $439 with solid-state drive.

In almost every case, the least expensive laptop is way more machine than you would ever need for those functions.

That being said, I would max out on Ram and I have always found that lighted keyboards are critical. I would try for a min of 8G ram if you can find one you like in a low price range.

I was just window shopping myself for something for kids to do homework/research on as well.

newegg has a dell inspiron 15 with i5 and 8gb RAM for $429...with that low of a price you could purchase an SSD and be good to go.

Thanks for the help. If I go with the Dell on newegg, which size ssd should I buy?

Depends on how much space you think you'll need. Laptops usually have 500GB or 1TB spinners. I never use laptops to store any large files long-term, so I comfortably get by with a 250GB SSD.

Just to add my obligatory $0.02, I recommend you strongly consider the refurbished laptop that Layabout linked above. It's a very good value all around and already has an SSD.

The link I posted comes with a SSD. That's what makes it such a good buy.

And despite its age, the CPU is actually faster than the one in the $429 Inspiron. The two cons to sort of consider, however, are the likelihood of shorter battery life, and the shorter warranty (not as big of a concern as people make it out to be if they buy from the right sources).

My desktop computer from newegg was a refurbished model and I couldn't tell it from new. Never had a bit of trouble with it.

I have a Lenovo twist from about 2013 and it used to give me headaches...but after some updates and windows 10, it actually works quite well....and is solid/tough.

It takes a beating.
