I can't get a clear answer on this, can the Roku3 or Amazon Fire play .mkv files without issue like a WD Live? I don't want to have to play from PLEX or KODI, just from an external drive.

Here ya go

This says you need to use the roku media player app, and specifically states that it will play .mkv files.

Roku will handle mkv files but only if the underlying video was in a format that Roku supports.

If I'm not mistaken, I don't think the USB slot on the FireTV can handle external video at all unless it's been rooted. Pretty sure they opened it up to store apps on an external drive but not to play videos (and there's no app other than Kodi that could do it from a HD).

I love my FireTV, but that is definitely a limitation. I use Kodi via network drive.

So a good answer would be FireTV - rooted?
