I just ordered an SSD, but I wasn't sure if I should install it before or after upgrading to Windows 10. Is there a benefit/disadvantage to either way? Thanks.

I would install the SSD and clone the HDD to it first, then install Win10. It will make the upgrade process go a lot faster.

Is a fresh install onto your new drive out of the question? Migration of programs and data can come later.

Rule #1 of operating systems is, always do a fresh install if that is remotely an option.

Rule #2 don't be lazy and try to get around Rule #1.

Actually, I didn't even consider it, and I definitely wouldn't even know how to start. Off to google I go...

I was going to mention that, but I wasn't sure if that was an option for the free Win10 upgrade. Is it?

Good point. I forgot about the cost feature and this isn't a new build.

OP - we may have to noodle on it.

Would this do the trick?

And if so, would this be a good guide to follow?

How to install windows 8.1 on SSD (I couldn't find a windows 10 guide)

ETA: Nevermind, it won't work as you have to do a dirty install then a clean re-install

To keep it "free" - you may have to revert to Korkstand's excellent advice in the first response.

Sorry for the confusion - I'M doing a new build in the coming weeks and I'm definitely doing a new Windows 10 install to a SSD. But, that will come with an associated cost. At this time, I have no plans to upgrade my existing Windows 7 machines to Windows 10 until I have vetted the OS with the new build.
