My flooded camp had an older non HD receiver(recently crapped out) and would like to buy a second-hand HD box. I have a very good rate with no contract and would like to keep it that way. If I buy a newer HD receiver will I get a HD picture or will I have to change my account to get HD?

Directv will send you a replacement without extending your contract or changing the rate. I think they charge $20 shipping if you don't pay monthly for the Protection Plan.

You would most likely need a new dish as well as the receiver. Those old ones aren't compatible.

I thought the same thing, but they wanted to send a technician to check my box that flooded last August. I declined that and suspended my account.

Yes, I found a Satellite tech forum and saw that. Additionally, the HD signal is more precise and needs very clear line of sight for it to work, which is not possible at my camp. I found a new SD Samsung box on ebay that I can get for $23.99 which I am about to pull the trigger on. A DirecTv technician checked the IRD serial number for this box and advised it will work with my current card.
