I decided to update my old system with Windows 10.

I haven't turned it on since I turned it on to update from 8 to 8.1.

So I pressed the on button. Nothing. Zilch. Changed the button on the back and tried to start again. Zilch. Changed the position of the power cord in my APC unit.

Nothing. Zilch. Did everything over again. Tried another power cord. Did everything over again. Zilch.

At this point I decided the power supply must be dead so I pulled out a spare and ripped out the old one. Took forever to get the spare in for some reason. It just refused to sit right.

Finally got it in. Pushed on and Nothing. Zilch.

At this point I should explain the power button on this case is sort of built into the case. You don't really see a button, you just press a spot on the case and it sort of gives in a bit.

After about 2 hours, I realized I was pressing the emergency shutdown spot and I pressed the actual power button and it popped right on.

I decided to frick around with BitLocker with TPM and not print/save key for the original drive.

Let's just say that drive in now useless on that laptop.

I've never bricked my machine but its only a matter of time before I get nailed by the crypto / ransomware crap since I'm always watching movies / tv from various streaming hosts sites.

I don't have much on my computer that I couldn't just reset and reload up windows. One of these days I need to get organized and drop everything important on onedrive because I will get nailed one of these days.

I didn't brick the machine, but I easily bricked the original HD in the machine. With TPM you're fricked. Even unseating the HD and putting it back will require the BitLocker key. I like to test things and BitLocker - not encryption, I know encryption - was test subject for me. I had an encrypted backup image so it was no biggie to replace the drive, drop the image, etc.

That said, I'm the #1 opponent on this board to cloud storage. I think it's a combo of being old school and also knowing the limitations of online security. I prefer to backup my own data on my own drives.

9-10 years ago, changing out something in the PC, and for some reason I had my case on its side and my hard drive plugged in and sitting on the side of the 3.5" bay, bare steel. These older drives didn't have guards over the PCBs, so every bit of the drive's controller was touching the steel chassis. Then I powered on the PC. Pop, smoke, bye bye data.

I don't really have much on my computer and what I have, I really wouldn't care if someone hacked onedrive.

Most of my financial info is on the respective financial sites so no need to keep anything locally.

I brought my computer with me when I moved to the Philippines and set it up the night I arrived. Made the mistake of plugging it in and boom. The electrical service is 220 here and at the time I didn’t know about the little buttons on the power supply to set them for 220 service. Blew the MB and power supply and lost all my data on the subsequent reformat after the repair.

Was working in outlook and was trying to delete a name off of one of our 300 person distribution lists...accidentally hit the wrong delete button and zap..gone. Spent the next several hours reinputting all the data.

I have an Apple TV in the bedroom connected via optical to an AVR for audio-only AirPlay from my iPod Touch. The last couple of nights, AirPlay seemed to connect as normal, but I got no sound. I tried HDMI and reconfiguring the AVR input, but nada. This morning, I disconnected the ATV, brought it into my media room, and connected it to the AVR there via HDMI for viewing on my plasma. The ATV UI came right up, and I found nothing awry in the Settings. I took the ATV off my Tomato Access Restriction list to allow it to check for an update, but it reported it was up to date. Still no sound, but AirPlay Mirroring was working fine. By chance, I pressed one of the Touch's volume buttons, and that's when I noticed the volume was 0. Boom goes the dynamite. When I got the ATV back to the bedroom, I remembered I had managed to reset the Input name on the AVR there when I was fumbling around half asleep, and I had to change it back from "VCR" to "Apple TV", which is always fun using the Denon front panel.

I have no idea how the Touch's volume got set to 0. I chalk it up to a poltergeist and fear the next few days.
