have had the Ion blockrocker for a few years, but its started to crap out on me.

Anyone have some good recommendations?

Main usage is for outdoor activites, beach, pool, softball/kickball games, etc. So it needs to have some power to it.

May be too small for your useage, but I have been shocked at how good the Nyne Bass is. Way better than the basic compact speaker.

I got a Jabra Solemate off woot last year and it sounds really nice. We use it outside when cooking out and having friends/kids over to swim. Plenty loud for that, but maybe not enough for what you are looking for

Check out the old cassette tape company TDK. I have their 2 speaker jam box and it's got some arse to it. 10 D batteries when not on the plug, but more power equates to a full sound. Mine's a bit older and I haven't looked at their line in a while. Life on Record is/was the line.

These are all outstanding products. I have a pair of the tiny ones. I almost bought a larger one for other uses, but the Nyne was just too good.

UE megaboom seems to be the better than the XBL at half the cost

I just purchased the UE megaboom and it is louder than I need it to be for my backyard. It is also very clear at loud volumes.

what in particular is crapping out?

I'm sure it's under powered...so likely could use an amp

a kit amp mgiht fit in the beast you got....and if you need a speaker change MCM electronics got the speakers

but more than likely you just want to plug n play....little to no work involved, correct?!

perhaps ION has an upgrade, or PYRAMID makes one like it with more power

I'm positive I seen MCM had a bluetooth 8" spkr with decent power for like 130.00

happy hunting

When I plug it in, it won't charge. I replaced the battery but that didn't do it

I went through the process of getting a new speaker a few weeks ago and researched my arse off. Check out YouTube for some good review and comparisons as well as going to Bestbuy and listening.. I will assume you are looking for something bigger than then Bose soundlinks, Pill, etc type of speaker and less than $300. There are really 3 choices for a weather resistant midsize speaker.

UE Megaboom is a loud speaker and that is it. If you are not concerned with quality of sound with highs, miss, and lows, then this will work

Fugoo XL is almost a perfect speaker. Great battery life and awesome sound through the highs, miss, and lows. It has the lowest bass of all these speakers. The problem with it is it does not get loud (as in loud enough for outside party use which I needed). If you want an inside speaker then this is it. I actually bought this and the JBL extreme and compared them for a week.

JBL Extreme is what I ended up with. Great sound top to bottom. Bass is more like a bazooka as in punchy but awesome. It thumps where as the Fugoo is more clear bass. The JBL gets as loud as you can handle it and is a great speaker. I really wanted to keep the Fugoo but the JBL beat it for all my needs.

Hope this helps..

ended up going with the JBL for the reasons you listed above. Happy so far, this thing has some serious kick to it. Puts my ion to shame

why anyone wouldnt go with Soundcast is beyond me

I've bought them as gifts on more than a few occasions, and I'm still getting kudos for it. They are the absolute best
