Phones for sale with little or no use. Why?

I see a lot of phones for sale on swappa or ebay where the seller has a phone in mint condition that they claim the phone was only opened to unlock etc. How or why are people selling these phones less than normal retail? I assume that with clean IMEIs they are not stolen. Just curious why someone would unlock and sale an unused phone.

Maybe they bought them subsidized on contract and are just keeping their old phone and making a profit on the new one. Although, I didn't think you could unlock a phone you bought on contract until the contract was up.

This. People who do this are usually happy with their current phones and just trying to monetize their subsidies.
Not sure how they are unlocking them...maybe jailbreaking/rooting? I think there is a way to assign a new IMEI to a device (but I believe this is illegal in the US and at the least, it's unethical).

I've been able to unlock contract phones after adding a new phone to my line. I was able to get AT&T to unlock an iPhone 5s after I added an LG G3 as the active phone on my line.

Seems like a whole lot of people doing that are selling the phones as unlocked though. I see where you can buy an unlock code on ebay. Are they applying this somehow?

Most carriers unlock phones free of charge.

Not while the phone is still on contract, which I'm guessing is the case when someone sells a brand new phone on an auction site.
