Open Source or Free video editing software

So, I have Windows movie maker and it works for putting together pictures to form a timelapse, no big deal. However, WMM will not alow me to split screen 2 videos together side-by-side.
Are there any opensource or free movie editing programs out there?

Not sure if you can do a split screen video with it but for my limited video editing needs I use dvdvideosoft
