I'm with Cox and yes my internet and TV are together that total a $120 together. You also aren't comparing apples and apples. You have satellite AND internet and your Satellite is expensive.

I'll just use what is on the Cox site.

Cox Cable with TV and internet is $100 per month for 12 months and then it actually goes up a little after that.
Cox Internet ONLY for 50mb is $60 which looks the same as comcast. Oh and trust me with a family of 4 cutting the cord completely you will need 50mb down or you will have problems.

So now you have an available $40 to spend which is a far cry from 80-130.

Sling plus at $25 gives you a very limited set of channels and no DVR.
Netflix $8 (Have already but lets add on as if I didn't)
Amazon Prime $8 (Have already but lets add on as if I didn't)

That's $41, I'm loosing a $1 a month for not quite as good service.

You are simply dropping your expensive satellite in place of sling so you will have savings which is not typical. The HBO account with comcast is value add for sure. What does that run if you have to subscribe?

I think my situation in dropping satellite/cable for Sling is fairly typical actually. And I very rarely watch any of the channels that aren't on there or available OTA.

I could also get Comcast cable service with internet for about $100/mo, but it isn't really $100/mo. Add $15 for DVR, plus $10 for HD, plus $15 for HBO (which is free with just internet). And that's just to a single outlet. Each additional HD box is $10-15/mo.

I don't look at my netflix and amazon costs as added by cutting the cord because i've had both for years anyway. You are right in that for me it is really just substituting $100 satellite for $25 sling tv.

If you are getting 50mb internet and full HD Cox cable service for $100 (or even $120), it may not be worth it for you. But if you take a close look at that bill I imagine it's probably higher. Also, the promotion prices on that will run out and go up, and cable companies aren't as good about renewing them like the satellite guys.

It is also worth noting that Comcast internet actually includes basic cable if you get the little box from them. You can upgrade it to HD for $10 extra I believe. I'm not sure if Cox does this, but makes that $60 internet look a little better.

Cord cutting obviously isn't for everyone, and I haven't even really been in it that long - my DirecTV sub actually ends today. But I'll save about $60/mo based on my current directv price, and that for me is worth it.

This is where it gets a little Apples to Oranges.

If we stick with the base cost of your Cable Internet - $60 iirc
That puts your TV only at 40$ with the $100 you mentioned.

Thats what we compare the price to.

Now add HD and DVR is a choice, one that you dont have with Sling, unless you go a Tivo route which then incurs like costs for equipment.

So for a $15 savings if you go bare bones Sling you get less channels, ability to only watch on One Tv/device at a time. I just dont see the advantage to using sling vs just getting a base tv package.

Im all for cutting the cord but I just dont feel sling is the answer right now.

Some of you guys most have failed math class

If you ALREADY had Amazon prime and Netflix and/or Hulu

you should not add that in to the formula. If you had internet already don't add that in either.

My Cable tv not including internet was right at$110 with tax- I cut cable, added sling tv with Sports for
$25 - net savings a month $85-

IF you did not have netflix, amazon etc then yea add it in

The words amazon or netflix are not even in the post you replied to....

Ok so $110 is what you pay for now for JUST TV ? Or is that internet and TV combined ?

this is roughly the math for me as well. i don't qualify for the cheaper cable bundles because i've been a customer for a few years. i don't factor in cost of internet, netflix or amazon because they are essentially sunk costs for me. i'm trading $110 DTV for $25 slingTV.

My point is if you are willing to Drop to minimal channels Then Sling TV is not a GREAT deal. On Cox alone you can drop to a $49 - ($75 after 3 months) package and get many more channels free hd and be able to view it on more than one device at a time and DVR. n/m this package sucks after 3 months.

Sure its $25 dollar more than sling but it is not an empty 25$ there is more there. You can even goto a 39.99 plan (w/o ESPN it seems though)

My point is people are saying they are at ~$110 for just TV are one with every channel in the lineup probably a few premiums as well. Of course that is pricier than Sling. But compare sling to a similar channel line up and its not THAT big of a savings

110 for me was all tv no internet

I did not watch even 1/3 of the channels- the main reason I never jumped before was sports Now with Sling I get ESPn and SEC TV

Sling as most of the channels the boss watches plus antenna- anything else we see on demand or Hulu

So I have been looking real hard at cutting the cord. Need some advice from the experts. I see many of you utilizing amazon fire tv and then loading programs. To cut my confusion and time, would anyone recommend a pre-loaded system from Ebay. Check out the attached Amazon box I may buy: Amazon Tv Jail Broken.

The seller seems pretty responsive in assisting customers.

I am going to make the leap. Here is what I am planning on doing:
1 Fire TV Box with TVMC and slingTV on main TV
2 Fire sticks for bedroom and den TV
1 HD Antenna for local channels
and have the various apps (Netflix, Hulu ect) for other viewing options.

Am I missing anything?

Depends if you want DVR, then you need to add that into your equation. Although, with TVMC I guess you can just pull up anything you want when you want.

Well I got everything set up in my main tv entertainment room. So far just using the fire TV box to run TVMC. I have that routed through my Xbox One which has all the Hulu, netflix, slingtv apps on it. Went ahead and signed up for Slingtv for 3 months to get a free fire stick to put in the living room. Just have to cancel satellite and I am home free.

As far as DVR for your Antenna, I would suggest a Tivo Roamio,

You still located near Hammond? I was wondering if you use an antenna for the local channels? I am looking at this Mohu 60 outdoor antenna and trying to figure out if I would be wasting money, I live just north of SELU if that makes a difference.

Yes I do. I tried the Mohu one and it didn't work all that well. If you look at my previous posts on setups the best one to me is the clear stream 4V. Use tv fool to adjust it also if you have your directv dish on a pole. Take the dish off, get some 10 foot sections of pipe from nu-lite. That way you can get it 20-30 feet in the air.

Officially cut the cord in my apt in Denver. I am using a Wineguard refurbished OTA and I am getting about 50 channels. Weird that the best reception is the antenna almost at floor level behind a couch.

Now I need to load Kodi onto my Fire TV and I am ready to rock.
