Hello!
I bought and put together a new computer with the help of a friend. I have 4 sticks of 4GB RAM available, but when we initially set up the computer, we didn't put the other 2 sticks in. Is there a way to add those other 2 4GB RAM sticks without the computer messing up? I tried it once but it wouldn't boot up. I'm wondering if I can get this because this computer I want it to have 16GB Ram.

Thank you in advance.

Were they part of a kit? If so, you should be able to put them on in. If they were part of a kit, and the PC did not boot once you put the two additional sticks in, one of the two sticks may be bad.

If you tried to boot up and just got a black screen and nothing, that usually means the RAM was not tight enough in the slot on the motherboard.

That would usually be the case if the RAM was the same.

If the RAM is different, it could be a compatibility issue.

But to answer the question, usually you just plug and go. You don't need to install it. You can verify it in the "System" area of the Control Panel.

It was 2 different sets. I have these installed:

And these I want to put in.

Did I just put them in wrong or will the computer not boot up because I'm adding more RAM?

What are the steps I should take, or is this even possible?

EDIT: I should clarify, I want BOTH sets in there at once with 16GB ram total.

You can mix and match, and the computer should boot. I assume your slots are color coded, so just put matching sticks in matching color slots (though it should boot regardless). You either aren't seating them properly, or one of the sticks is bad. To check, insert just one stick and boot the machine. If it works, remove it and try another. Test each one individually. If they all work, maybe a slot is bad. Boot with 3 sticks in, and this time keep trying to boot with a different slot empty.

Most likely, though, you just aren't getting one of them seated fully. Either that or you just got unlucky and your sticks just don't want to work with each other.

You would think, but it's not always the case. Just a few production runs apart is enough to cause compatibility issues across channels. However, if you put kit 1 in DIMM slots 1 and 3, and kit 2 in slots 2 and 4, it should work even if the brand is different.

But... some motherboards can be very finicky about 4 slots being occupied at once on first boot. Some motherboards have a memory compatibility button next to the DIMM slots that will run through different speeds and timings until it posts. Then you go in the bios and manually set the XMP profile. I had an ASUS Z68 board a few years ago that wouldn't boot with 4 DIMM slots occupied until I first booted with 2 DIMMs, went into the bios, and manually set the timings and frequency.

Bottom line, it is imperative that OP remember which sticks were packaged together and be sure to run them in pairs ACROSS channels (i.e. matching color slots as you said).

Beyond that, I need motherboard model.
