Nest Protect - Wifi Smoke Dector. Anyone have one?

Recently bought a house that has 2 Nest thermostats. We need to add 3 smoke detectors. The fiancé wants to get these Nest smoke sectors but I'm not sure about paying $100 each. Are the worth it?

I have 3 of the gen 2s. They are nice but not sure they are worth it, but if you have nest thermostat & a wink/smart things hub then it may be worth it. Plus they look nice.

I have 3 because I am a nerd that likes having high tech in the house.
Was cool to have a voice tell me that smoke has been detected the first time we fired up the brand new heater and it was burning the protective oil on the heating element.
Are they any better than standard detectors? Probably not.

They're pretty cool. We just built a house and put 3 of them in. The first 2 weeks we were here, we had 2 false alarms in the middle of the night. Nothing quite gets the blood pumping at 3am like hearing a woman's voice suddenly say:
"Heads up. There's smoke in the living room. An alarm may sound. The alarm is loud..."

Plus they have a light detector that senses when you walk by in the dark--nice touch. Also on your phone app it tells you battery status.

This alone is worth the price of the alarm. Mine always and I mean always start beeping at 2am.

I never thought I could get so excited about a smoke/carbon detector but I love mine. It's cool that it knows the difference between burnt pop corn and an actually fire. And the pathway light alone makes it a feature worth buying. I'm shocked more products don't have this feature.

This x10000.
I have two of these in our house, both were gifts. (Also have the thermostat and a camera in the nursery).
When we got the first one, the damn thing went off in the middle of the night, no warning or voice, just the siren. I think this was a known issue that was fixed with a software update, because it hasnt happened since.
I would recommend them if you already have Nest products. But if you are building onto a different smart home system or building your own from the ground up, there are probably cheaper options out there with the same features.
