Need some advice on Light bulbs that connect through Echo Dot.

I'm looking to buy the kiddos an Echo Dot and a light to go in a lamp in there rooms. Wanted to get something they could change the colors by asking Alexa to change the color. Is this possible? If so, was hoping for some recommendations on which ones are best.

I have the gen 2 hue (you'll need gen 2 or later to work with Alexa) and unless an update has occurred I don't know that you can change the color on request with those. You can change the brightness and I think change the scenes (which would change the colors when setup properly) but to say "Alexa, bedroom blue" I don't think works. At least not on the ones I have...I also haven't had access to use the lights with Alexa in 2 months though, so maybe things have changed (moved out and haven't got a new one)

You set up scenes.
So it would be something like Alexa, turn on sunrise bedroom.
Then you could program a scene called sunrise to go from red to regular light over a given period to simulate sunrise. Or some other scene of your choosing.
You can also do it through IFTTT to do specific colors.

Yes to both of the above solutions. IFTTT is what I am using

I have LIFX bulbs that work great with the Dot.

if you have a google nexus or pixel you can tell it outright 'set iris to color red'.
not sure why alexa doesn't support that yet.
and v1 hue hub DOES work with alexa, it just doesn't import the scenes you create on your phone so you're limited to telling it to turn the lights on and off or what dim level you want them at.

I can tell Alexa to turn on the lights in the master bedroom and it works fine. I guess you may be referring to the color scheme? (I just have the white Lifx bulbs, didn't see us using the colors for anything).

Yes. Google Assistant/Home allows you to say a color but Alexa does not.
