Suggestions on where and what kind.

I don't need 3D or a Smart TV or anything too fancy. Just a nice HD Widescreen.

ETA. frick, forgot about the Tech Board. RA'd. But will take suggestions and info in the meantime.

I'd suggest a surge protector as well my man.

Not bad. The one that's shot was a 42" and I'd like to go at least the same size or little larger.

But that's definitely worth looking into.

I suspect I can have this one fixed for under $100 because it comes on but then goes into Standby before ever showing the pic so the power blinking apparently shorted out something on the power board (most likely) based in what I've read.

But I don't think it's worth repairing a TV that's 5+ years old really. Unless it only cost $50 or less. I'm going to take it to the shop not far from here for a free estimate just to see.

Have one.

Lightning didn't get it as much as the sudden blink off/on of the power apparently. I don't know exactly what happened as it happened while I was gone to the store so just going by what I was told. I do know there were some lightning strikes that were damn close.

I'm sure it is. But I don't need one that big for where this will go and I don't want to spend that much either.

Will probably end up looking into what Vizio has for what I need. I haven't had any issues with Vizio and have one that's 10 years old.

no surge protector is going to stop energy coming into your home from a close ground lightning strike. The surge usually comes up cable or satellite lines.

Titus, scroll down a few threads below for the 55" 4K tv sams had on sale last week for $428

if your budget is $500 (like mine was) i would keep an eye on 50-55" range deals. you can get a great tv to replace yours and hold onto your $2k budget to get a really nice UHD/whatever in a couple years once the content delivery catches up with the latest tech improvements.

4k is still worth it now if you can get it under $500

Thing is, nothing else that's plugged into the power strip was damaged. So I'm pretty sure it was just the sudden blink in the power/surge that got thw TV. The DVR, BlueRay and wireless headphones all appear to be fine.

I do notice that when I tried plugging the TV into other outlets that it sparks everytime.

Everything I've read says I have a short of some kind on one of the components on the board. I just don't have a fluke Peterborough soldering iron and expertise in this area to work on it. And even though there are YouTube videos, by the time I bought parts, and a fluke and and a soldering iron it would cost as much as having it fixed/replaced.

Thanks.

Yeah I'm not spending 2 grand on a TV for down at the lake (that must have been one of the other OT baws that was looking in that price range).

The price range and size you mentioned is what I had in mind.

I figured Sam's was the best bet unless BB or somewhere was running a special. I have a cpl Vizio from Sam's that have been flawless.

I found the thread and I'm going to check it out and see if they still have some here local. Thanks. That's pretty much exactly what I need for where I will be putting this.

Surges do not blink. A blink might follow a surge. But a surge is a massive incoming transient. Once permitted inside, then that surge is incoming to all appliances. It only damages one or some that make a best connection to earth.

Nothing on its power cord (unfortunately called a surge protector) claims to protect from destructive surges. That magic box only claims to protect from transients already made irrelevant by what is inside all household appliances.

If a 'whole house' protector is not prooperly earthed, then that magic box protector might even create a fire. Since even it needs to be protected by a device connected low impedance (ie less than 10 feet) to single point earth ground.

A five year old TV is still new. Generally, a surge only damages one or very few internal parts. More often, a damaged part is an outgoing path to earth - not an incoming path such as AC electric. Repairs are often easy. Much harder is to find someone with sufficient knowledge and parts to do that repair.

I had a lighting hit about a month ago.
Knocked out my router, but not my modem. Both on the same outlet.
Knocked out my radio, but not the charging ipad on the same outlet.
Knocked out my bluetooth speaker and charger, but not my tv, on the same outlet.

I have had some bad luck with lightning recently. Knocked out those appliances about a month ago. Messed my neighbor up more (AC, couple of tvs, her DTV equipment, modem/router, all fried). Then this past weekend we get hit again and the transformer in front my house blew up. I literally haven't even felt safe inside my house during these past two storms.

If you want cheap, Walmart has this 55" Sansui for $299, and last week it was on sale for $250....I bought it for my grandmother, who basically just needed a big-arse TV because she is slowly going blind. It's not fantastic, but it was under $300 for a 55" TV shipped to her doorstep. SDTV looked pretty terrible on it, but HD didn't look bad at all for the price point.

That is exactly what a surge does when one does not properly earth a well proven 'whole house' solution. Also what happens when plug-in protectors are used.

A surge incoming on AC mains is all but invited inside to hunt for earth ground. That surge is incoming to everything. Is everything damaged? Of course not. A surge is electricity. Both an incoming and an outgoing path to earth must exist - simultaneously. Incoming is to everything. Surge selects items that best make an outgoing path to earth (ie router, radio, bluetooth speaker). Meaning other appliances (modem, ipad, TV) were protected.

Damage occurred because a surge was all but invited inside by the homeowner. Either it is earthed BEFORE entering. Or it finds earth destructively via appliances. Worse, adjacent protectors sometimes make that damage easier.

Informed homeowners spend about $1 per protected appliance for what has protected from direct lightning strikes even over 100 years ago. Provided by companies known for integrity. Companies such as Belkin, Panamax, Tripplite, APC, and Monster are not listed.

Each layer of protection is only defined by what harmlessly absorbs hundreds of thousands of joules. A 'whole house' solution is effective due to a low impedance (ie less than 10 foot) connection to what does protection: single point earth ground.

That 'whole house' solution is your 'secondary' protection layer. Your 'primary' protection layer is installed by the utility. An exploding transformer implies earth ground was missing (or stolen) from your 'primary' protection layer.

Protection is always defined by what absorbs hundreds of thousands of joules. If that earth ground is missing (always missing with plug-in protectors), then that protection layer does not exist.

Protection is always about where hundreds of thousands of joules harmlessly dissipate. A protector is only as effective as its earth ground - as originally demonstrated by Franklin over 250 years ago. And routinely found in facilities that cannot have damage.

Good price. If it lasts a year you'll be ahead.

Yeah, umm I wasn't here when the TV went out. The Misses was. I come down to the lake to get away from her, so when she gets here I find an excuse to "go to the store". I was just going by what she told me. Power went off, came right back on, TV wouldnt work. She called DirecTV thinking it was the satellite. Which the receiver still seems to be working.

I did some investigation and the TV turns on, lights up but it goes into Standby before it shows a picture.

If it wasn't for the fact that i pay for DirecTV I wouldn't care if the TV worked at a during the Summer.

I'm going to take it to the shop tomorrow and then get a new one this weekend if need be.
