Navigation system preferences

Is there any way to modify the preferences in a nav system to give Hwy #s instead of local street names?
It is totally ineffective to get an instruction to turn left on Maggie St when you are in a Podunk town 1000 miles from home.
In most cases the street name is not even posted on a sign.
This is a pet peeve of mine and all navi systems seem to be alike in that regard.
I've always thought there must be a way to select Hwy # designations instead of local names.
Is there such an option?
