Has she changed anything on her phone? Installed a new OS upgrade, added some apps? Anything that has changed from 7/5 until now?

I can't tell you how to fix it, what I suggest is Google what OS she updated to and see if others are having the same issue. Usually within hours of a new OS version issues, people have fixes available.

What kind of email service. Is it a crappy POP account and when she downloads it from her laptop it's pulling the messages off the server? Or is it a modern mail system like Gmail?

From Fox's posts, I imagine it's IMAP and she's been using it without issues until her OS upgrade on 7/5.

The root cause issue is very likely the upgrade to the new OS. If everything was working before, it doesn't matter if it was POP3, IMAP or Exchange.

When I did the Kitkat update on my N5 a month ago my email stopped working. Everything but Gmail stopped using the stock mail client. The strange thing is I don't know what fixed it since 4 or 5 days later when I picked up my phone it had mail again. It was only the stock client so I downloaded Nine for Exchange and now us it since I like it better.

My S4 did same thing after update...here is what I did.
Swipe down from top to bottom on phone with two fingers, should bring up the board where you can choose options, highlight the "Sync" button and it should work.
