My three year old computer just suddenly shut off

Like no message nothing. It as if someone pulled the power plug on the computer. I check for dust and everything, it's clean. There was no windows error message about being improperly shut off, but it did give me the option to go into windows in safe mode.
So something happened.
Thoughts?

It didn't automatically. I had to press the power button. Then it gave me the option to go in safe mode. I decline and did it normally. Things seem to be working fine thus far..

Might be just a power fluctuation. The option to boot into Safe Mode is normal when Windows detects that it was unexpectedly shut down. You're probably fine.
ETA: If this starts happening frequently you may consider getting a APS - that's essentially hooking up your computer to a battery that in turn is plugged into an outlet. That will smooth out any power surges better even than your normal power supply and it gives you some operating time off the battery if you lose electrical power.

UPS? APC is a manufacturer of Uninterruptible Power Supplies...
It could be lots of things, bad CPU fan, motherboard issue, power supply... In the system BIOS, there usually is diagnostic program to test hardware. Usually you can hit F8 or delete to interrupt windows startup to run it...

Sudden power-offs (which you are able to power on again) are typically caused by either the CPU or power supply overheating.
Run it with the side panel of the case off, and watch your CPU and PSU fans (to see if they work). Download CPUID HWMonitor and monitor temperatures.

you can likely see something about it
by looking in your EVENT viewer folder...
and copy paste whatever is in there in your fav search engine for further details

If you really verified CPU temps are normal, then verify power supply fan is working.

Based on his questions, I would doubt he knows what normal CPU temps are.

I googled that guy, because it was just way too weird that he popped in here just to make a bunch of posts about surge protectors. Turns out he's everywhere -- reddit, tech forums, electrician forums, etc.-- posting long lectures about surge protectors any time the subject comes up. He's been doing it for years. He just posted another one on reddit literally 3 minutes ago as of this writing.

He's a crusader, all right. I can't remember a time when he wasn't around. Google /"w_tom" surge/ to see how far he really goes back. He's pretty famous, actually. That said, my favorite guy from back in the day has to be Archimedes Plutonium. That guy was a real hoot, while westom is more tedious than anything.

So, what's the point of it? Why surge protectors? Is it really just for internet fame?

I don't know anything about his background or why he's been fixated on this topic for so many years. I do think he's sincere in his preaching and probably driven by the belief he's the only sane man in an insane world.
