Microsoft Surface Yay or Nay? *Updated*

Sams is running a special on an i5 Surface Pro with the keyboard for $798. I recently switched jobs and lost my iPad. I've used an iPad for work for the last 3 years and there are a lot of great things about it, Apple ecosystem and all. The iPad Pro is nice, and the Apple Pencil is pretty legit.
My new job uses a lot more internet based software and I'll be doing a hell of a lot more Excel work. As much as I want to wait to see what Apple is releasing soon regarding iPads, I feel like the Surface would be a more useful device.
So do I sit tight and wait on the Apple event, bite the bullet on the surface, or look elsewhere at another Windows tablet?
***Update. One week in and I can't tell you enough how much I've enjoyed using this thing. What a great device. Been able to remote into my desktop while in meetings. Battery life is not iPad good, but more than serviceable for my needs. Thanks for the advice folks.

The Surface is nice. I used one for work recently and I'd love one.

I'm writing this on one. It's not as intuitive as a Galaxy Note or iPad, but I hated the iPad. Just not an Apple type. Also, not nearly as many apps. Not even close. Also, it can be a bit glitchy at times with the keyboard. It can just suddenly stop recognizing the keyboard and you have to reset. That can be frustrating.
However, I do like it being a PC. I do like adding Micromemory. I do like having a USB port, and a Displayport. The Bluetooth works great. Office apps work as they should. Overall, it's not bad, but it's not a tablet. It's a thin PC with a touch screen. If that's not what you want, you shouldn't get it.

Do you really need "apps" when you have access to internet based and desktop apps? Don't have Netflix, but I can pop open the browser and go to the website, right?
How's the pen?

Apps are very low hogs on space and memory where programs can eat into real estate quickly. Most everything is there, but there are Android apps I'd like to use that aren't available on PC. So, I installed Bluestack, an Android emulator. It works pretty well.
Pen works great. Get the pen.

Love mine. It's all I use at home, period. I use very few apps. I don't feel like I'm missing anything there.

I use exactly 0 apps and don't feel like I'm missing out on anything.
Plus, I bought one of those screen sharing dongles for miracast, and use my sp4 as a remote of sorts for my tv. Helps when what I want to watch can only be found on a foreign website

I've had a Surface Pro 3 for awhile now and think it's great. I can run any Windows app I like.
I use it to do demos for work and even installed Oracle Enterprise on it. Obviously it doesn't have the storage to run your typical Fortune 500 business but it runs the software just fine.

I love mine. Just like the screen size at 12'. Makes reading and finding things so much better and it runs almost all the apps i have on my desktop as well.

I love mine. It's great for school between OneNote and just the normal MS Office programs.
