Microsoft is planning to unveil its Windows 8 successor next month at a special press event. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the software maker is tentatively planning its press event for September 30th to detail upcoming changes to Windows as part of a release codenamed "Threshold."

The early technology preview will give developers a first look at the new mini Start Menu in Windows 9, alongside the removal of the Charms bar feature and several UI changes. Microsoft is currently compiling builds of Threshold ready for the preview that include an early version of Cortana, but it’s not clear if this particular feature will be made available as part of the technology preview

I like the codename.

For the non-gaming geeks, Threshold was the name of the gas giant where the first Halo was "stumbled upon" when Cortana manipulated the Cole protocol while fleeing Reach.

Hopefully this will be a good version given their history.

I would agree to disagree since it would be a losing batter. Apparently I am the only living human who is happy with Windows 8.1 and likes it better than 7.

After bashing 8 and even contemplating returning my new laptop b/c of it, I sat down with Windows 8 for Dummies, set my laptop up how I want it and now love Windows 8. Change is hard, but after calming down I realized it really isn't all that different. I still hate the charms and thought I had disabled them, but no biggie. I was completely wrong about Win8. It does not suck and I actually like it now.

Windows 7 was great. Windows 8 improved on it and made it even better.

People always bitch about change

The only reason there's any sort of pattern is because they change the name to shake off the stigma of the previous version. I can't speak for ME because I never used it, but people hated XP when it came out, and it took a long time and a couple service packs before people started liking it. Vista was similar, and it actually got decent after a couple service packs, but rather than wait for people to like it they released the Vista service pack called "Windows 7". I'm sure the Win8 service pack called Win9 will be as well-received as 7 was.

Install start is back and suddenly Windows 8 is near identical to 7 except for added native functionality and security. I held out for a while, though.

They had to do this.

Enterprise customers have flatly rejected 8, for the most part.

I have no doubt 8.1 can be made to be decent, but the market has spoken.

I hope my Surface can accept 9.

No doubt it will. It will essentially be 8.2

Do you really know enough about it for you to think it's just a "small" update like a service pack? Or are you just guessing?

It's basically a guess, but from everything I've seen and read not much will change. And let's look at the actual version numbers of the last few Windows releases:

Vista -- 6.0
Win7 -- 6.1
Win8 -- 6.2
Win8.1 -- 6.3

So even though a lot has changed in that time, both UI-wise and under the hood, Microsoft hasn't changed the major version number. Normally they change the name when there's a UI refresh, but the previews I've seen show 9 with the same visual style as 8. There are new elements (most notably the start menu and virtual desktops), and old ones go away (charms), but the theme is the same so far. It just seems like, if Win8 had been liked from the get-go, then this should be 8.2 or 8.3. Instead, since they know it will solve most of the problems most people have, and that it will be liked, they are just going to call it 9 to try to forget about 8.

I like it. Mostly old people complaining about change.

I agree. Wanted to make sure sure I didn't miss anything. I'm in the middle of a WS 2012 class right now and many of the demos and labs involve working with 8.1. It's not so bad. Much easier to work under the good than 8 though.
