Looking at picking up a refurbished MacBook pro (circa mid-2105) with the "256 PCIe-based flash storage" option. I've never owned a Mac, so I'm wondering what the minimum drive space needs to be. My current Dell laptop has a 512 drive, but I only use about half of it.

I would primarily be doing simple photo editing (using the MacOS) and some web development running a Windows 10 WM.

Also, what are the external drive options, in case I want to store alot of digital media?

thanks for any advice ...

What does most of your current storage consist of? Music? Movies? Pictures?

Other than the OS and software, the only thing i would store would be photos and videos via iCloud. If I could configure iCloud to sync photos/videos to an external drive, that would be fine. I'm just not familiar with the Mac ecosystem.

You can probably go with the smallest drive but the 256 should be plenty. Once your pictures upload to iCloud it only keeps a very low res version on your computer (if you set it up to do this). When you go to look at the picture or use it it downloads the high res version. Mac does a pretty good job of optimizing space.

I'd probably go with 512 GB. The Windows partition will be at lest 10 GB. The Win 7 partition on my MacBook Air was ~30 GB if I remember correctly.

Get the 256GB SSD and use a 1TB external HDD to store media on. You should be able to find one for under $60 and you can have the best of both worlds.
