My wife's iPad mini 2 is no longer in service and I'm letting her use mine to read on, etc. I basically only used it to browse the web, sitting on the couch, and for AirPlaying videos to my Apple TV.

I was going to replace one of them, but found a Macbook Air 2014 (11") on Craigslist for $500. It seems like it would be as good as a newer macbook, with the addition of a keyboard. Is this a decent buy?

I would check and make sure it's not stollen. I have a 13 inch MacBook Air and love it. No problems at all

Definitely a decent buy, as long as it's in good shape.

The only shitty thing about the MacBook Air is the screen, but then again, the lower resolution is what enables it to get such great battery life

the resolution is low; not even 1080p. the panel tech is really outdated and the colors don't pop; even the 13inch non retina 2012 MacBook Pro that apple recently took off the market had more vibrant colors. also, theres a huge unnecessary bezel.

maybe if you don't look at any of apples retina screened MacBooks it looks ok, but its night and day next to any other laptop in its price range.

Thanks for the input. I'll probably pass.

Biggest reason I was looking at a cheap MacBook option is so I can iMessage from it.

The best deals I've seen on any MacBook are on the most current 13" mb air from Best Buy. Msrp is $999. When they run a sale, their open box models are priced around $750.... if you have a coupon, you can bring it to the $650 range. I've bought several open box MacBooks from Best Buy and it literally looks like someone opened it, turned it on, and returned it.

If you want something a bit more impressive, I'd recommend the 2015 retina 13" mb pro.
