Mac & Iphoto help

How do I back up my Iphoto Library to an external hard drive so that I can free up space on my mac book air. Everything I read says to just drag the iphoto library file to the external hard drive folder. When I try this I get the circle with a line through showing that I am not allowed to do it. I cant figure out why it wont let me do this. Can someone let me know what I am doing wrong.

Sounds like a permissions error. Check to see if you have full read write permissions on the the external. Click on it with finder and then hit info and permissions.

How do I change the permission?

When you click on the user name on the right side you will see a box called privilege. It will probably say something like read only. Click on it and change it to read & write.
