Low Cable Signal Question

Here's my situation:
I've cut cable.
I can still pick up 10 or so channels plus the networks in HD with a coax running from the wall to the TV.
TV signal is perfect when a straight line but some channels are choppy when I have to split it for Internet.
I have to run the cable though a 50 foot cable because the jack is on a wall with stairs so I assume that's the reason it can't power both and I only had Time Warner power that jack when I originally set it up.
Would some type of booster be able to remedy the situation or am I just stuck using my antenna?

Are you using RG6?
Are the connectors secured properly? (Not crimped)
Are there are any dents or kinks in the cable?
Are you using a quality splitter?
If you answered yes to the above a good amp will help. Put it at the beginning of the cable run where the signal is strongest.
Note: It's best to use a booster from the cable company because occasionally they will send a signal through to fry illegal chips before a big pay per view event and they have been know to knock out signal amps.
