Convinced the wife to switch to PS Vue.. so far not bad. The problem we're having is that the signal seems be dropping out far more often than in the past. We have two Fire TVs, one Firestick, three phones, laptop, Echo Dot, and probably a couple more devices I can't remember. We don't get "connection lost" or "no internet connection" messages, it just seems to either bog down completely or just get stuck trying to load something.

Would we benefit more from an upgraded modem with 16 downstream channels (Arris SB6183), or a better router like TP Archer or Nighthawk? Currently have a Linksys dual-band AC1200 router

I'll hang up and listen, thanks!

Your router should be more than plenty. Have you ran speed tests when it seems to start going slow? PS Vue recommends around 10mbit per stream.

What internet speed are you paying for? When do the slowdowns occur, is it always in the evenings?

Only option we have in our neighborhood is Cox, but I have the Premier tier. The main FireTV that is used for Vue'ing is connected via ethernet, and between my wife and mother-in-law, that dude is streaming all day long

It's the devices over Wifi -- phones, laptop, etc. -- that seem to randomly just stop loading websites. I wouldn't call them slowdowns per se, because the content never actually loads. It's almost like you lost connection, but have no indication from the device that it's disconnected.

when this happens I typically jump from the normal band to the 5Ghz, or vice versa, and things run smoothly again

Same here. DTVN runs smoother than PSVue

Sounds like you have some 2.4ghz congestion.

Using an old cordless phones around the house?

no cordless phones, but that question made me wonder about the baby monitor for our 5-month old... which apparently "uses 2.4GHz wireless digital technology"

That would definitely do it. If you have any tools a channel scanner could work wonders for your WiFi. Might be able to move channels and clear up a lot of your issues if your baby monitor stays fairly constant

I'm on Comcast and had a SB6120 which could do 4 channels up and down. I was getting 75Mbps down. I've been having some issues with my modem the past month. I decided to get a SB6183 and give it a try and instantly got 100Mbps and connection has been rock solid. Over on the dslreport forums, they say the 16 channels of the SB6183 will help prevent slowdowns during the prime time hours vs a modem that can only bond 4 channels.

Also, Comcast gave me an offer which lowered my monthly cost by almost 30% and bumped my internet speed. I'm now getting 180Mbps which is amazing.

BTW, for streaming video I would highly recommend avoid using wifi and use a hard wire ethernet connection. Powerline networking makes it so easy these days to not use wifi.
