Don't need any smart functions or anything but something that will last a long time and has a good picture. I'm not good with the technical details.

Kind of looking for some first hand experience testimonials

Well, if you're not getting a smart TV you should for sure get a set-top box. ROKU or Fire TV, IMO.
I really like my VIZIO. Clear picture and it has never given me issues other than the smart capabilities. What I mean is, the app library is garbage and Netflix doesn't work all the time. Fire TV is a great alternate to a smart TV. Just get a basic TV and a set-top box, IMO.

For my inlaws. Already got them a Fire TV setup. Their TV was actually fried today when lightning struck nearby so they're looking for another one.

It's really hard to find a dumb TV these days, but if you can you might save $40 or so over the smart version of the same model. It's probably not worth the effort in looking that hard, though. The smart features don't hurt if you never use them and use a FireTV instead.

That's what I'm noticing as I look. Any suggestions?

I have a 65 inch Vizio and spent way less than $1000. There should be good sales coming up for Labor Day. I got it as an open box at Best Buy and the guy gave me the Labor Day sale cost.

Slick Deals
This.
And keep this graphic in mind:
We're hitting diminishing returns with respect to resolution. We're still years away from having widespread 4k, and I don't see the 8k being of any use unless it's for a projector.
Slickdeals has a $1200, 55", 1080p OLED (which, depending on where they fall in the above graphic, should probably take priority over 4k).
I needed a new television a few months ago. I think we're a year or two away from seeing a $1000-1200, 65" 4K OLED. Right now, that would run you over twice that amount. What I did was get a refurbed 55" 1080p TV for $400. It's plenty solid enough to hold me over for 3 years before I make the 4K OLED leap.
If they aren't picky, I would recommend going that route.
If they are a bit picky, fall into the 1080 region of the graphic, and want to be fairly future proof, spend the extra $200 on the OLED. MUCH better black reproduction.
If they are picky and fall into the 4K is worth it region, I would go my route and get a sub $450 TV to hold me over for 2 years when that $1000 will get you a TV that won't be obsolete for another 7-8 years.

HDR is what makes 4K tvs stand out compared to regular 1080p models. Any late 2015 or 2016 model 4K tv is on another level. Previous 4K models were not worth it imo.

Avoid the vizio. Just set one up for my girlfriends dad and had to download an app on my phone to change the menu settings on the thing. Came with a mini remote with only a few buttons. The phone had to connect via Bluetooth to get into the menu. Maybe they all are t like this but I wouldn't get it for older people.

$1000 will get you a much larger TV than 55''. Especially if you don't want a Smart TV.

2 different kinds of vizios;
- standard with regular remote
- 'smart cast' models with a mini remote with like 2 buttons
sound like she should have bought the full featured model not the 'google cast' model.
