Has anybody used this instead of Wink or Smartthings? I'm wondering if it would be a better idea since it can work with the entertainment system too.

I have it and i also have smartthings. I'd advise having both. It's great for TV but i prefer smartthings to control everything else.

Are you talking about just the hub or the Harmony Home Extender. Haven't heard anybody talk about using the extender.

Ive used it for my Nest Thermostat and like it. Nothing like changing the channel and kicking on the a/c from the same remote. I also recently bought some Wemo sockets for some lamp lighting that pair with the hub but have not installed them yet.

To me having everything in one app, and in this case the remote, is merely a convince factor.

its severely limited in what it can do though in comparison to smartthings (or presumably wink). Plus once you invest in ears (echo, dot, google home, etc) having everything in one app becomes significantly less important.

Also, if you link the two hubs together the activities, routines, robots (whatever you want to call it) show up in both apps.

That will help. I still advise smartthings (or wink) as your main lights/routines hub however.

Harmony is dumb in the sense that if you press all off it turns everything off.

Say you have the following activities going:

Watch TV
Turn on Living room lights

If you tell it turn off the tv it turns off every single activity. So your lights would go off too. It's a nice hub for TV, but that's about it. I had to write(actually copy smarter people on the internet) a ton of workaround scripts to get it working with my google home because google home does not support it natively yet. Alexa does, but its still somewhat limited what it can do as well.

In order for it to work with google home you have to speak to google home, who speaks to an app called join using IFTTT, who speaks to tasker, who speaks to the harmony plugin, who speaks to the harmony hub. You can imagine the lag time with all of that going on. Sometimes two seconds, sometimes 10. And i had to set up all of those tasker profiles using a tablet that no one in the house ever uses anymore. Had i done it with my cell phone none of the scripts would work while i was away from the house.

Is there a way to use wink/smartthings to control the TV without something like the logitech hub using the dot?

Wish these remotes worked with Amazon Fire TV. The CNET review I read says they don't.

from a little googling it shows that FireTV does not accept infrared. That's not an issue as the harmony hub is RF. So Fire TV's are in fact compatible with the harmony hub.

They would not be compatible with a lesser harmony remote like the 650.

Turn on CEC on your TV. Your logitech will work with it.

I have a 650 and use it to control the FireTV.

I use this and not smartthings. Controls all my entertainment center functions and Nest/ Wemo from within the app, if needed.

Oh apparently it's only the favorites feature on the Harmony Elite:

quote:

Another nice use for the screen is favorites. With Watch TV you can designate any number of TV channels as favorites, and they appear complete with network icons on the remote screen for direct access -- no need to memorize channel numbers. The same goes for Roku channels; the screen provides direct access to Netflix, Amazon Instant and other apps if you set up a Roku device. That feature doesn't work with other streamers like the Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV, however.
