My gf wants one for Christmas. She doesn't do anything elaborate, no gaming or anything, just a nice laptop for everyday tasks, streaming media, typing reports, etc.

There's so many options out there I don't even know where to start. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Just go to an office supply store and walk out with one. That's what I did when our first one died on us. I think I paid around $325 for a Toshiba 15 inch a few years ago. It still works fine today. Just basic online stuff, photos, music. We had a big 17 or 19 inch Toshibe widescreen but that thing was a beast. More like a desktop replacement, but it was heavy. It fell off the couch one day and landed on a corner, and the hard drive was all messed up. Or look around on Amazon for deals. Anything new these days will probably be more than adequate for those basic uses.

Those look pretty legit.

Quick techy question: she has a Samsung Note as a phone and absolutely loves it. Is it advantageous to get a laptop with the same operating system so they can link up? For instance, will a Windows computer link with the Samsung note? Does it need to be a Samsung computer, or just run the same OS?

Hope that makes sense.

Are you asking if you can manage the Samsung device from the Windows computer, including backing it up? If so, then yes.

I'm not really sure . Shows how much I know about this.

Like a guy I know who has an IPhone. He got a Mac and says it automatically links to his phone when close by. What would be the equivalent with a Samsung Note?

You don't even need a Mac to do that with an iPhone. You can do that on a Windows laptop. All you need is iTunes. You can setup an android Sync over Wifi. The concept has been around for a long time and is not platform exclusive.
