IT is not a very specific job description. What do you want to do? PC programming? IT Helpdesk, Networking?

Where are you going to live would strongly determine any suggestions I'd make.

Check out the salary guide from robert half for some ideas on what to do and be a baller. 8 years might as well be an eternity in IT terms.

What do you want to do in IT? Do you want to be a tech going on site doing field work? Do you want to be an engineer? Project manager? Software developer?

Thanks for the link, pretty interesting.

To the OP, computer systems analyst is always in the top 10 for best jobs, but it's not a IT job necessesarily. It's basically a liason job between IT and end users, so it helps if you have applicable experience in another field. It's a mix of business and IS.

As relates to CS Analyst he might also consider an Agile Scrum Product Owner / Scrummaster position if he's less IT and more business/people.

Security will always hot and continues to grow in importance given all the issues with these big retailers, Sony, etc. Combine that with new issues moving to the Cloud.(Virtualization, networking, federation, hybrid situations, mobility)

SG_Geaux is right that those may be the biggest need for the future.

Look into Web Development as well.

You can make some nice coin creating and maintaining freelance websites.

If your qualifications are accurate and not churched up any, you can go just about anywhere you desire making in the range of $150,000 to $160,000 per year.
