When Apple first introduced the iPad back in 2010 it was heralded as a "magical and revolutionary device" that would play a part in the "post-PC" era of devices. In the subsequent years since the launch of the iPad, many have debated whether the laptop is dead and the PC era over. That hasn’t quite happened yet. While the iPad continues to sell well even as sales decline, today’s Apple financial figures paint the clearest picture yet. Apple now earns more money from Macs than it does from iPads. Apple’s iPad business took over its MacBook business back in 2011 in terms of revenue, and has taken over its entire Mac business consistently for a number of years now. That’s starting to reverse today.

Apple made $5.6 billion in revenue from its Mac sales in the most recent quarter, and $5.4 billion in iPad revenue. At the same time, Apple sold 12.6 million iPads in the recent quarter vs. 4.5 million Macs. The surprise revenue turnaround casts some doubt on Apple’s "post-PC revolution" with the iPad. Apple’s iPad sales have been decreasing consistently in recent quarters, and Apple doesn’t have an answer to counter the trend. Rumors of an iPad Pro with a stylus have surfaced over the past year, but Apple has only chosen to refresh its line with very few improvements. A decrease in iPad sales is likely related to consumers not refreshing tablets as much, a lack of big improvements to the iPad, and the fact that smartphones are still revolutionizing the industry more than tablets.

Everything has its place. Pads are great but they play a role. They're great at websurfing, scrolling pictures and social media but that's about it. So an older model pad surfs pretty much as well as a newer one. No real speed or memory concerns. So it's no surprise sales are flattening. People get one and keep it --no rush to upgrade.

Yeah, I always figured tablets would end up somewhere between a fad and a full PC replacement. Which is where it belongs -- an in-between device. They're still trending towards convergence. Apple is probably holding out because they're watching the Android/Windows market. An iPad Pro would introduce redundancy in the Apple line-up, so if it happens, it wouldn't be a decision they'd take lightly.

I much prefer surfing on an ipad versus iphone...but I could never replace my laptop with an ipad...I much prefer physical keyboards when typing in Word or Excel.

Ipad is also great for watching movies in bed, or reading e-books.

it has its place but it is not a laptop replacement

Unless you have an iPad 2. Those struggle to open safari.

I saw an old interview with bill gates and the question of the declining pc came up. He said whenever something is so dominant or mainstream, people are always looking for the next replacement and thinking it's coming to an end. It was a few years old and it's still true.

I personally believe a keyboard and mouse is necessary for business productivity. That will not be replaced by any touch screen variant.

For other uses, including business related, touchscreen devices are more convenient and just as useful.

Unless there is a game-changing interaction, that's the truth to me. I can leisure with my phone, tablet, etc, do some constructive work. But if you want fast, efficient, multi-tasking productivity - getting shite done - give me a laptop, or desktop with multiple displays, kb, mouse, processing and graphics.

This is from a guy that can hook up his phone or tablet to a Cisco router and CLI commands.

Yeah, I don't know if there could ever be a superior replacement to the mouse. Or rather, if there could ever be a refined-enough interface that made touch superior to the mouse. There's just a level of precision and efficiency with mouse and keyboard that is currently unmatched. It could very well be because it's what we've grown up using, and the market is just waiting for our generations to die or at least decline into senility.

Bought a Galaxy Tab tablet about two years ago and can't imagine wanting to upgrade. Maybe for forward-facing speakers? Probably not. A better camera? Probably not. Higher screen resolution? My old eyes can only see so well, anyway.

The only technology that would truly excite me at this point would be affordable virtual reality systems.

Tablets and phones are great for mobile connectivity, but if I'm at home, there's no substitute for wide screen hi def monitor and a keyboard I can actually type on.

Someday there will be a scalable device that goes from desktop to briefcase to pocket. Someday.

Some sites just do not work well on my tablet. Especially if it has drop downs. I believe my next machine will be one of those folding jobbies with a real keyboard attached.

I think the hybrids have life, like the Surface, but tablets will largely remain recreational devices.

I've owned 5 to date, and while I have enjoyed all 5 to some extent, I also grow frustrated by my inability to use them as a laptop replacement even for browsing purposes. You can't really kill a ton of time on here doing it, as responding is much more difficult.

Moreover, with more compact laptops, I just don't really even see the point of overcoming the migration challenges.

People are just using their iPads for a long time. I've had iPads that worked after 4 years as well as the day I bought them. I normally get a new iPad every two years and have since the original iPad but I am not going to upgrade this fall when I am due because at least for now the platform has matured and leveled out so there really is no need to upgrade frequently now. I just believe iPads are on a longer ownership cycle now and that is why the sales numbers are flat.

I love my mac, never had problems with it like i've had with so many PCs, the only thing that really hurts is the price tag, but i've had my macbook pro for 3 years and no problems, longest a PC lasted for me is 18 months

Not sure how that pertains to this discussion.

Mac's don't have special hardware. The processor is an Intel processor. The components are made by other manufacturers and available to PC's as well.

Here's a quick LINK to explain.

If you "PC" only last 18 months, you're buying the wrong "PC". The main thing that differentiates a Mac and "PC" is the operating system. Mac uses a Unix core. "PC's" generally run Windows variant, but no one is stopping you from using Linux.

I hate these arguments, buy what makes you happy. But don't be a sheep with your reasoning. It's adjacent to someone saying, "I bought a $199 laptop from Walmart and it sucked, but the $1200 Alienware I bought lasted 3+ years and was awesome." No shite, huh?
