Internet Provider Help

Hey guys, I need some help. I live in Sterlington, LA and just purchased a new home. No internet is available yet other than satellite internet. U-Verse is supposed to be available in the next month or so (they've been saying that for 2 months). What should I do? Does anyone have any recommendations?
ETA We will be using it for gaming, streaming Netflix, etc.

quote:In that case, satellite internet will be worse than dialup. Gaming via satellite is basically impossible, and you would probably have a very small data cap making Netflix impossible. Satellite internet is an absolute last resort, only good for light web browsing and email and such.

quote:Not really. Either wait for Uverse or keep doing research. There may be a provider that you don't know about. Look into wireless options. I would go with an LTE hotspot before satellite.. better speeds and probably a similar data cap. Also check into wireless ISPs... I think there may be one in your area, but not sure if you're in range.
Any suggestions?

The home was advertised as "AT&T U-Verse available," so I didn't think anything about it. They are in the process of burying the fiber optic lines so they say, but can't give us a timeline of when to expect service. This has been going on for 2 months now.

That's pretty fricked up. Does AT&T have decent cell service at your house? If so, if I were you I'd call the seller every day and demand they get me an LTE hotspot until Uverse is actually available.

I'm in a similar situation. Bought some property in a semi-rural area, and has no internet service available. My friends who bought in the same area think it I'm ovverreacting to the lack of service, but it's a pretty big freakin deal.
It's a major highway, so we're trying to convince U-verse to provide the service to the area.
Right now it looks like an LTE hotspot or satellite are the only options. I don't plan to build anything it's resolved.

Same situation at our lake house....got a lte hotspot from T-Mobile and streaming video and audio is not counted toward data caps. $35 a month and works decent for a weekend but not sure I would want as permanent solution

A little off topic but att just sent me a letter capping my monthly use at one terabyte. Has anyone else gotten this and how much is one terabyte?

quote:One terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes, and it's a pretty good amount. It takes a lot of streaming video to hit that cap. That's today, though. In the near future, when 4k video becomes more common, lots of people are going to blow right through that cap.
