Ok so my buddy came over and he does professional home theater installations. He didn't persuade me against going with a soundbar, but suggested that an in-wall/in-ceiling setup could be easy to setup because of the access to the walls surrounding my media room.

I have a large walk in attic are so you can easily access the walls.

If I decided to go with this option, do you have any suggestions? I'm not sure on the price range, but my buddy says he can get me the speakers at wholesale cost. So now I'm thinking the Sonos soundbar might be on hold for a minute, but I'd still like to use the Sonos sub if possible.

trust me, there are much better subs for the price of that thing. If not for going with a complete Sonos integrated system, it wouldn't make sense to get it.

Man there are so many different speakers and a huge range in pricing, this is about as confusing as it gets. The sub is the least of my concerns right now.

Seriously though, I see $800 for a single in-wall speaker down to a highly rated $250/pair setup. I have no idea what to do.

Basically, my room could potentially accommodate two front facing in-walls, two in-ceiling above the sofa/theater chairs and two back wall in-walls. I'm wanting to start with two front facing speakers first along with a sub, then eventually get a center and the two rear in-walls, then finally the two in-ceiling speakers above the theater seating.

Yeah I read a bunch about those last night. It seems to be a favorite on a few audio forums. Very affordable too.

I just don't see how speakers this cheap can be all that good, but they consistently have good reviews.

I don't know whether it's comforting or not, but they've been involved in legal disputes with Klipsch, I believe, for buying the same subs direct from their overseas supplier, smacking a different label on them, and selling them for much cheaper. Many of their products are sold this way. Think of them as more direct access to cheaper goods direct from manufacturer. And they spend next to nothing on advertising, but they pretty much rape you on shipping charges to make their prices look low. They are still typically cheaper than other alternatives.

Interesting. But look at the link I posted from Amazon. FREE shipping on the ones I linked. I guess I need to look at their models as well. That would be crazy paying next to nothing for what is essentially a nice Klipsch speaker setup.

I have some from this line...I got them off ebay at 1/2 price so maybe your guy can do that for you. LINK

Get the sonos sub only if you have other sonos zones.

There are tons of other Inwall/ceiling speakers out there. I settled on the UIW stuff because it has it's own box...meaning it does not rely on the wall channel to act as it's box.

I saw. But look at the cost of the speaker on their website, then estimate shipping. They do have some ridiculously low prices direct from Monoprice with a high shipping rate that usually gets posted on Amazon for one set price with free shipping. They're usually within a few dollars of each other. I've seen some disparities into about the $15-20 range when comparing. If I looked correctly, the speakers you linked coming direct from monoprice and shipped to my house would be around $80/pair. If you go that route, do some research between Amazon and Monoprice's actual website. If you can stand multiple shipments, you may save a somewhat significant amount of money.

I have the 8" 2 ways from monoprice in my hone office. No complaints from me. They can be cranked up pretty good with no audible distortion.

- I also have the 5-1/4 center channel with 6-1/2" round 2 ways as my surrounds. Overall sound is great for what I spent on it.

In wall and in ceiling speakers can do a fine job. If you go this route I suggest that you get speakers that are in an enclosed box that fit into the opening. This takes the acoustics of the stud bay and attic out of the equation and greatly reduces sound bleed to other areas of the house.

Open backed speakers do not perform nearly as well as speakers in an enclosure that are made to go into the wall cavity (stud bay).

Solid advice.

To the OP, I have Speaker Craft 8" speakers in my ceiling, and they sound great. My particular speakers (AIM-8) have the ability to aim your tweeter toward the main listening area, instead of only downward, and this helps to achieve the surround sound without needing to place speakers on bookshelves or on the floor.

Center channel however does face forward, sitting atop the TV.

Good advice. This should help with bass response as well.

I built an enclosure for my in ceiling speakers with 2x4s between my studs and MDF over the top with all joints sealed. It seemed to help.

*are prefab enclosures available for old construction applications?

All good advice and thanks! I'll have to see what the backside of those walls look like and then buy enclosed I guess. Looking forward to picking up the first set this week!

Can't you run all of your speaker wires to a media closet where your receiver will be? Just put a wireless sub in a cabinet somewhere. You can hook up sonos to your receiver and run your music through that when you're not watching tv

Yeah because I have such a large attic on the other side of the spot where the tv is being mounted, I'll be able to hide ever single box from sight.

Subs and cabinets don't mix. Way too much vibration from the subwoofer for that to be viable. Unless you have a shitty sub that doesn't go low and then it works just fine.

Mine must be shitty then because it works for me--but I get what you're saying
