I've used a MacBook Pro the past 5 years. Bought mine new in June 2012, I think it may've been the last model before Retina display. Long story short, a drink was spilled on it a few days ago and the rice method hasn't worked

Plan on buying a MacBook Air, likely will be refurbished because I'd like to keep it $350-450. I don't use it much, mainly for school and such. I don't have any specific programs on it

I only say MacBook Air because I'm extremely familiar with Apple and all of my other devices are Apple. I may be open to another notebook though. 13" or so likely

Woot just ran a special on Macs in the last few days. This happens usually 2-3 times per month for prices similar to what you mentioned.

Just hit up their website at midnight for about ten days and you will have a good chance of picking up what you need.

I don't know what to avoid, but I have had my MacBook Air for a long time. It has survived a lot. It is Model MBA 5,2 or Mid 2012. It has Intel i7, 8 GB memory, and 256 SSD. It was pretty much the maxed out MBA at the time. I've run both the latest MacOS and Windows (through parallels) and they never seem to slow down. I'm only at 319 cycles on the battery and have about 85% of the original capacity. If I dim the screen, it will last me 6-7 hours of web browsing, processing, etc. before needing to be plugged in. I would bet this would be the model that would be in your price range.
