I already have a HTPC im going to run the software from and i will be running the IP cameras through a PoE Switch.

First, Do i need to run super high speed Ethernet cable for this or is cheap cat 5 or 4 ok for this application?

Second has anything used this budget camera? Hikvision DS-2CD2032

If not what do you recommend in the 100-150 price range?

Can you even buy cat4? I wouldn't even do cheap cat5.

I would do 5e or 6, just in case you want to repurpose some of them in the future, or if you update to higher res cameras and/or higher framerates, and need better cable.

well im not planning on needing to upgrade these, though it might be a possibility. The location would have no reason to purpose these lines. I just dont want to spend 100+ for a spool of cat 6 wire.

Cat 5 is fine for what you are doing. Hikvision is the OEM for a lot of cameras out there currently that are IP or TVI.

Then spend $80 on cat5e.

I'm just saying that I wouldn't skimp on it. I don't know how many cameras you want to install, or their locations relative to one another, and that is a big factor here. For example, if you have 4 cameras relatively equidistant from the switch and from each other, then you would run cable directly from each camera to the switch. In this case cheaper cable is the better value. However, if all 4 cameras are far from the switch, then it might be more cost-effective to put a second switch/hub/whatever near that group of 4 so you have to run less cable. In this case, 4 of those cameras may push the limits of a cat5 "backhaul" to your main switch.

i thought the price gap was more between cat 5 and 6. I understand what you are saying. i only need to run one wire but yea i had already though if i had multiple things on that side of the use i would use a 2nd switch.
