I am certain that you and everyone else who does this will manually check for updates on a regular basis, read up on all of them, and install the appropriate ones to prevent your machine from becoming part of a botnet.

He might be the worst person who posts on TD. Not the worst poster, the worst person.

If he hates microsoft so much why does he continue to buy their products. He should join the Apple Cult and then we wouldn't have to hear him whine so much.

Did you buy that property or expect it for free with no strings you don't love.

The irony here is Windows locks down the update process because of users like you. It's trying to protect you from yourself.

I don't understand what Windows is offering you that OS X can't offer, other than your affinity for $200 piece-of-shite laptops.

Dear god. First Windows 10 eliminated WMC, then it came with Office 360 advertising built in, now this. Ah well, it's still useful in a VM for stuff that requires Flash.

This is the same guy that installed malware scanners from download.com, which found all the crapware he got from download.com.

Windows isn't your property. You just pay for a license to use it.

If you hate Windows and Microsoft so much, and if you really want to be in control of what your computer is doing, then I strongly suggest you switch to Linux.

I made the switch about 7 years ago, and I don't miss Windows at all. Actually, when I have to use a machine with Windows it frustrates the shite out of me. Linux gets the hell out of my way so I can do what I need to do.

It updates what and when I tell it to. It asks, of course, but it also details exactly what is getting updated. As a bonus, it doesn't just update the OS, but it updates ALL of my software. I don't have to go to this program and that program and dig through menus for the "check for updates" option, nor do I get annoyed with systray popups from a dozen programs yelling at me about updates, NOR do I have to ever visit a website to check if there is a new version out. There is one single update system that notifies me when updates are available for every package on my computer. It's nice.

I love the command line, but some people are afraid of it. If you are, don't worry, you rarely absolutely have to use it. BUT, if you play with it here and there and learn a few commands and things you can do, you just might begin to hate having to fiddle through half a dozen windows clicking buttons to find what you want to do. I'm not saying you have to learn all the ins and outs of it (I've only scratched the surface myself), but it doesn't take much to learn how to read a command, even if you couldn't write them yourself without a reference. Once you get a feel for the basics, it's simple to google what you want to do, then just copy and paste the command into your terminal. Not only does this offer more control over your system, but it's faster to google/copy/paste than it is to dig through all the "advanced" sections of several windows.

Unless you absolutely have to use software that's only available for Windows, then you should strongly consider Linux. At least install it on a spare machine that you don't use anymore. It will probably become your go-to machine for doing many things.
