I need to start numbering 3 pages into my document. (after the table of contents). I read the Word explanation about inserting page breaks, but I have already written the document so when I go to break pages it adds a blank page in the middle.

Can someone explain this process to me in dummy terms.

Add a section break, not a page break

Go to 2nd page of document (have the cursor on the 2nd page), click on page layout tab, click on breaks, select next page under section breaks

What kind of document is this? If you are going to print it out, just make different save files for the title page, table of contents, body etc and number each section the way it needs to be.

Its a proposal and I need to send it all in one file.

Why isn't there an option that says "start numbering here."

I'm getting pissed off.

Can you send it as a pdf?

I don't think so. I have to send it in Word. I'm not exactly sure the difference though.

The section break trick should do it. It'll allow you to have a separate header/footer starting at page 3. It shouldn't add a new blank page. You can also display section breaks if you need to.

I had this same problem when I was writing my dissertation. I eventually made each section that had to be numbered differently it's own file. Then I combined them all into a single PDF. I never could figure out how to number each section differently within the same document/file. I feel your struggle and pain, sorry I can't help anymore than that.

You should only have to do it once. I don't know why its adding a blank page... Which version of word are you using?

Eta: maybe try one of the other section break options.

I DID IT!!!!!

put cursor on page that you want to start numbering.
insert next page break.
insert
header..DESELECT LINK TO PREVIOUS
insert
footer...DESELECT LINK TO PREVIOUS
then add the page numbers,
it will still start with three, so you go to page number format and hit "start with one"

now I have a blank page right before my first numbered one though.

anyone know how to delete pages?
