Two parts...
1)Recommend a decent SSD that wont break the bank and
2)how easy it to transfer my OS over too it?

I followed the boards instructions an built my own awesome computer so now I need help switching over to the SSD.

1) Samsung 840 EVO for performance and price
2) I recommend a clean install of OS

1. Samsung 840
2. you should probably just do a clean install. much easier.

After new install then I just transfer what I want over to the new drive (i.e. games and programs)? BTW, what is the best recommended setup? What should I put on the SSD and what should I put/leave on the HDD?
Thanks again

If you want to pinch pennies, check out the 120GB (if that's sufficient size) Kingston SSDNow V300. Consistently cheaper than the samsung, and you'll almost certainly be happy with the results.

PNY 240GB for $80 after MIR (expires 8/20/14).

You will need to re-install all software after doing a clean OS install.

After the shenanigans they pulled with that drive I will likely not buy it no matter how cheap it is

use the SSD for your OS primarily and maybe games that utilize a shite ton of resources, like fallout or skyrim.

My brain screams to give this logical option a +1, but my bias for the Samsung controller interferes with me practicing what I preach. I just got a 500GB 840 Evo the other day. Spent $40 more than the cheaper options. However, one awesome thing about the Samsung 840s and up is the RAM caching in "RAPID" mode.

Obviously, the sequential speeds are nothing close to reality, since you will always be bottlenecked by the controller moving data to and from the DRAM cache, but it does theoretically provide a nice bump in accessing small blocks. The most considerable improvement is latency. Still, I'd challenge anyone, including myself, to take a blind test and tell me you can feel the difference in everyday use between RAPID mode on and off, let alone the difference between any SSD from the past year.

I just looked it up, because I wasn't aware of any shenanigans. So apparently they started shipping units with asynchronous NAND, but not before sending synchronous NAND units to reviewers.

That's worse than the AIBs that sell video cards with both Hynix and Elpida memory under the same SKU.

Someone on reddit did a review of each drive that they shipped, and performance was almost exactly the same.

But thats just shady and shitty business

How did they bench it? Async supposedly slows down much more when the drive gets filled.

both of these

there are migration tools but your OS won't run as clean as it would if you just clean install. Use your old HDD as storage.

To be fair, a migration would be just as clean as its source, if done properly. The most accurate argument against doing a migration is that if your existing windows installation is a couple years old, an SSD is a good opportunity to trim clutter and get a fresh start.

No love for Crucial or Adata?

I have a 240GB Samsung 840 in my laptop but the 512GB I just bought for my desktop is a Crucial.

My recommendation was based mostly on specifically asking you about a few of the cheaper drives vs the Evo 840 series in a thread a few weeks ago and your response. I'll admit I am out of my league when it comes to the minutia in hardware, specifically SSDs.

I was also unaware of the scandalous actions, but that's some pretty messed up stuff. I need to take the time to read up on these things when I have time to spare.
