I have DirecTV so it will be used for when my reception goes out. I also will use it to watch local channels (picture and sound is excellent ota).

Do the flat ones that go on the window any good? Recommendations?

I've got the amplified 50 mile Mohu Leaf hidden behind my blinds in a window on suction cups. I'm picking up stations 54 miles away so no complaints here with that one.

it all depends on how far away from stations you live

Is the reception stable? Also, do you think having a screen on the outside of the window would hurt reception?

I've never had a problem with reception. I'm pretty sure it has been full HD every time.

I have a screen on my window, and also a small backyard with a fence and neighbor about 40 ft from my window.

I was lucky, the people that I bought my house from left a huge arse antenna in the attic. It is about 4 feet long by 3.5 feet wide (triangle shape). I pick up about 42 clear channels. I am in Metairie.

Sure but you need to get an Antenna amplifier splitter. I have mine on one TV I am going to see how it reacts to a second TV.
