Haven't bought one of these things in 5 years. Last time went for an HP for about $800, and it's served me well, but it's starting to stall badly and act funny. Bout time for something new.

Do I want to make switch to a Mac? If so, what kind? How much more am I gonna have to pay for that? What's the downside of switching from a PC?

Also, what kind of OS do I want on it?

Try giving your needs and the specs (or full model number) of your old one. The laptop for someone who wants to watch Netflix and edit Google docs is different than the one for the person who is a photographer and does their editing on their machine is different than the person who plays games (which has its own divisions inside of it).

Why are you asking us these questions? Maybe tell us what you do with it...

I'm thinking really hard about getting a Surface Pro 3 with the Atom and a smart keyboard ($499+$129=$628). We are currently operating with two 16GB iPad 2's, two 64GB iPhone 6's and a 2007 Sony VAIO that is...well, it's rickety as sh!t to be honest...

The SP3 would be kick-arse for light office work from the house and super mobile as well.

I bought my wife one in January. Intending for her to just use it for sewing and embroidery since she already has a MacBook. I bought the docking station, type cover, separate bluetooth keyboard/mouse and a 5 port 3.0 USB hub. I had Office 10 laying around from work. She has gone nuts with this thing. I honestly believe she forgot where she left her Macbook. I am super impressed with it. I also hooked up our 2 TB external drive to her docking station and bought a cheap external disc drive since some of her sewing programs require a disc. I would definitely buy a 2nd one.

Wouldn't it just be called the surface 3?

Make sure it has a SSD, whatever you decide. Makes a world of difference.

Best buy has the 2014 MacBook Air for $899. You can't go wrong with 12 hours of battery life.

For the basic model, I've been looking at those laptops that fold over into a faux tablet. Ergonomically, they adapt to many sitting positions and work environments.

Or you can get a PC with similar/better specs and save $1000 to $1500

Because this thread was obviously so very helpful that he didn't need to.
