What cool things does it do other than play music?

My two-day (aka 7 day) shipping delayed mine, so I'll just come back to this thread in a few days. Hopefully some cool ideas.

Why was the computer tired when it got out of the car?

Because it had a hard drive.

That was one of the jokes she told me today. I am also curious how to get full usage out of this thing.

My wife got us 2 for Christmas. Love em. If you have Wink and smart lights and you get the Wink "skill" (through the Alexa app for phones), you can control your smart lights through Alexa.
Also if you have a harmony hub, you can control your TV and stuff through Alexa.

Just what I've done today.

this will be the thing that everyone has in their drawer in two years and when you run across it, you will say "oh yeah, i remember that thing, it was cool for a month."

Not if you're into home automation. I have 3 and everyone in the house uses them multiple times daily.

I got one too. 90% of owners use it as a timer. It's pretty useless unless you have a ton of home automation stuff

Does your phone have to be in range of this to work? I.e. can my wife or mother in law use it while I'm at work

I was legit researching Google Home and low and behold, wife (no pics) got me an Echo for Christmas. I really wanted the Home but just said frick it and hooked Alexa up to all our smart lights and thermostats.

Amazon beat all the other smart speaker folks to market and after this Christmas, will have a pretty lock solid hold.

Hopefully they continue to develop it.

Excited to see how they move forward from here.

It connects to your house wifi, no phone needed.

This is Gen2 on the dot. There has only been 1 Echo, and I don't know how much they can change on the hardware side of things. It's basically a speaker and microphone connected to the internet to search. All improvements have come in the way of 3rd party integration with the Alexa Skills. I think it's kind of up to the 3rd party companies to figure out how people will benefit from hands free access to their products and will it generate extra revenue for them.

I know you can request an Uber from Alexa, and there's at least one pizza company that you can order from.

Could not be more wrong. I got the Echo on the early pre-release deal thinking it was just a cool gadget but found it becomes near indispensable. They are FAR more useful than first blush - hell, just the shopping list function is worth the price.

Plays Rock Paper Scissors.

I use mine in the kitchen mostly for music and timers and random questions that come to mind. But I plan on getting some of the home outlets and such after the holidays.

This is where I'm at. I just got one (Echo), but it is very useful. Various questions/answers, shopping list, recipes, unit conversions, etc. The typical timers, music, etc. is awesome too. My kid loves it as well.

As I move more into home automation, it should play a major factor into that as well. It integrates with my Thermostat, wink hub, etc.
