I'm in the process of moving to Texas hill country, canyon lake to be more specific and I'm very limited on my internet providers.
Looks like hughesnet satellite internet is the best choice.
How screwed am I?
I've never had anything but high speed cable through charter or cox. Always been pleased.
Anyone have Hughes?

A friend of mine has it. I don't think it's too bad until the weather gets bad. That being said I don't think using it to stream Netflix will be real great either.

It's not awful and they are launching a new satellite that will provide up to a gig

It's really grown leaps and bounds in recent years

Also, very jealous of where you're moving. Blanco and CL is my dream retirement area

My experiences with it in the past are it's better than dialup but probably not as good as a reasonably good wifi hotspot. But otherwise expect a lag, so probably most noticeable when sending and expecting a response. I would think that would mean less problematic for streaming once things have started but more problems for gaming.

What are your other options? How is your cell reception?

....It's only slight better than having to manually drive the packets from where you are to the server (Ok maybe not quite that bad but you get my point).

Hah...They told my company they were working on that 3+ years ago....still moving packets at a snail's pace on our job sites that have no access to terrestrial lines or cellular signal.

I found one broadband provider in the area offering 20mbps for $55
With unlimited usage.
Though that's not great it's better then Hughes. With Hughes I wouldn't even be able to stream video.

latency is a major issue with any satellite provider. If you have a terrestrial option, go with them every time.

Go with that. It has been a long time since I researched satellite internet, but from what I understand, it's not bad at all for general web browsing; however, the latency is so high, you're not going to have much luck with streaming media or online gaming.

You also have to deal with tiny data caps where they throttle your speeds if you go over.

compared to what? going to the dmv? a root canal?

satellite internet should always be your absolute last resort.

We switched to Excede for out tertiary connection at my job. Seems to be a little better than Hughes.

Call GVTC and see if they serve your area.

I did and they do!
They're coming out Saturday to install. Only broadband carrier in the area. 20mbps is fastest they offer my zip code, it isn't blazing fast but at least the family can stream video.
I was truly terrified thinking we were gonna have to go satellite route.

IMO they are horrible. I had them before I switch from DTV to Eatel. I understood it was satellite internet and that it could be slow at times, but when my damn cell service is better than the internet they offer I couldn't help but ask myself why the hell am I paying for this crap?

On the other hand, I suppose it's better than nothing.
