How to track new episodes when streaming TV?

So I currently have Uverse and my contract has expired. This caused my monthly price to jump up ~$50. I have been looking at cutting the cord because of this. My wife and I typically don't watch anything live. We may turn on the TV to see whats on and turn to a channel to have noise going. All of the shows we actually watch on a normal basis (sans sports) we watch from the DVR. We rely pretty heavily on the DVR to tag new shows and record only first airings of shows.
What is a good way to track when new episodes are airing or when a show resumes from a season or mid-season break? This looks like the biggest hurdle for cutting the cord currently.
Currently looking at either PS Vue on Roku (since I already have a Premier+) or Directv Now and getting one of the free apple TVs.

Just use Hulu on any of those devices (appletv, roku, ps4, xbox, amazon fire tv, etc). Hulu allows you to add shows to you "watchlist" (which is basically like clicking the "Record Series" button on a DVR). Then the Hulu app will tell you if you're all caught up on that particular series or if there's new episodes.
The ONLY catch is that you have to watch it 1 full day after it originally airs. To me, that's not a big deal at all.

I use Trakt with Exodus. Not sure if it would work with DTVN or Vue.....probably not. I think Vue has a blue bar on the episode similar to netflix (white bar) that indicates whether you've watched it or not.

I just got this and it's so bad I ordered a FireTV box yesterday. There's nothing wrong with PS Vue, but it's interface on Roku is limited to the "Homescreen tiles". To change a channel you have to exit the show you're watching and go back to the homescreen tiles. With FireTV it appears you get a live guide like with most cable boxes. I'm not sure if they'll fix eventually but for now it's not a good interface, especially for doing what you're talking about. There are plenty of shows "on demand" but in the Roku interface you have to have watched the show or search for the show to access them. And even when you find them I haven't seen how to access a list of all of the episodes of a show on demand like if you want to skip one.
Again, nothing wrong with the PS Vue service, I've just found the interface through the Roku to be very disappointing.

With a Roku on Play Station Vue, you have to add the show to "your list" of shows and it will record it and save it for 28 days.
