How important is having an unlimited data plan?

So, I'm up for renewal with AT&T. I've always done the 2 year thing, gotten a phone for $174 and if I wanted another phone before my 2 years were up, I would just buy one on Craigslist and upgrade that way.
I have an older plan, and still have unlimited data on my phone (wife has a 3Gb plan) and am clinging to it, even though if I look at my actual data usage, I'm not doing more than about 2Gb per month.
I'm on wifi 90% of the time between work and home.
I called AT&T to talk to their retention dept, and all they want to talk about to reduce my bill, is to move me to a data limited plan to save me money, and the Next plan options as well.
My company pays my 1/2 of our cell bill, so if it's a little high (I'm currently paying about $150 for 2 phones), I don't mind so much as I'm only paying 1/2 out of pocket.
Should I just do the 2 year contract, keep everything the same and get new phones for the contract price? What does the TB recommend?

Keep unlimited, I don't think you'll save enough to justify it; especially with you only playing half.

Same here. I have had an ATT unlimited plan since day one. But IDK if I really need it. I have been looking at TMobile and their deals. $80/month is redic for a phone to look at TD on.

It all depends on your data usage.
with ATT rolling over data, you can accumulate some data month to month. It only rolls over the previous month, but if you stay pretty low it won't be an issue.
Another objective for me switching to a Mobile Share Plan was the access to tethering.

sprint will cut your bill and half and give you unlimited everything
Tmobile has some great plans
Dumped AT and T and so has the rest of family and friends

I never wanted to switch off either. But I'm now only paying about 75 instead of the 125 I used to for my share of the bill.
Considering I'm on WiFi about 80-90% of the time, I certainly don't need it.
I have Verizon.

Keep unlimited. Tech changes and you may wind up using that phone more for data. I used to think that and now I'm using 5 gigs per month when I used to use only 2-3.

This is pretty much our situation. We have never used a lot of data because we focus on data usage activities when wifi is available. Verizon was going up 20 bucks a month on our unlimited data plan. Our data usage had been less than a gig per month for a long time so the switch was a no-brainer; our nets savings including that future increase is about $50 dollars per month.

Keep it. I wish I would have never given mine up.

Everyone will have to give it up eventually. Once that happens, you'll get another opportunity for truly unlimited data. But it won't be for the prices folks pay now.
When those plans were created mobile carriers never dreamed phones could consume that much data and be used for so much. Yes the mobile carriers are money grubbers who restrict you and act very cartel-ish. But Unlimited Data like the die-hards have will eventually go away.

It really doesn't matter anyway. If you go too far over their allotted amount for data on unlimited plans, they will throttle your connection to a mostly unusable speed.
At one point it was around 5GB. It happened to me one month, and my connection was throttled to around 0.01-0.03 MB until my billing cycle started over.
In short, frick AT&T.

Didn't VZW just get sued for throttling data speeds? And it was proven that it was, indeed, illegal for them to do that?

Pretty sure ATT stopped throttling as well.
You will eventually have to give it up. If you won't exceed the limit, and it saves you money, why not switch?

They just said they will not throttle until you go over 22gb a month.
So that makes it very much worth it to keep your unlimited plans.

I just stay with my "unlimited" plan because it's cheaper for me than switching to mobile share, at least until AT&T stops the subsidies. But yeah the throttle point is pretty high now, higher than I'd ever use on my phone without trying really hard. People still like to jump all over anyone who calls it an "unlimited" plan as if we all don't know by now that there's a throttle point. If we started calling it the 22GB plan, people would be even more confused.

If you're a high user of unlimited data, you get throttled, which makes the "unlimited" useless. The main reason you are using that much bandwidth is streaming media...and throttled streamed media is awful. Compare your plan to a high data plan and see what the price difference is. Then you can judge if it's worth it.

Advanced notification that your speeds may be slowed down
You'll receive a text message from us before experiencing any change in speed in a billing cycle The text message will be sent each time you reach 16.5GB (75% of 22GB) so you have sufficient time to adjust your usage to avoid network management practices that may result in slower data speeds. Speeds will only be reduced when using data services at times and in areas that are experiencing network congestion. Speeds will return to normal at the start of the next billing cycle.
You receive a text message about reduced speeds
If you have a smartphone and exceed 22GB of data in a particular billing cycle, your data speed may be reduced during the remainder of that billing cycle if and when you use your phone at times and in areas that are experiencing network congestion. You will not experience any reduction in speed while using Wi-Fi.

They will just go up on the monthly rate for the unlimited data plans like Verizon did. Verizon was going up $20/mo for our unlimited data plan (they gave us a months notice). We weren't using much data anyway so we switched to a limited data plan that has unlimited minutes and unlimited text messaging and are saving about 50 bucks a month.
