My mom gave us an old laptop from her office for my MIL. It still has shortcuts and files from the server that I can't just simply right click and delete without being connected to their network. Is there another way?
It would probably be easiest to wipe it and start over but I don't have a Windows 7 disk or a recovery disk and this was obviously set up as a network pc.

What error does it give you when you try to delete?

Take it off the domain, put it back on the Workgroup.
Create a new account.

Disk cleanup or ccleaner, etc. should delete unused icons...
I don't know why you wouldn't just create a new profile though

You must have offline file folders turned on. You can try turning that off. Easiest way is to just remove it from the domain and create a new local account.

Without admin rights, he wouldn't be able to do that. And he would need to be on the network.

Possibly

Not to take it off and put it into a workgroup

Using Offline Windows Password Editor, the local admin password can be reset, or a local admin user can be added. Then the domain can be unjoined.

well for one, you could make a new folder [ moms stuff ] and slide them all into there to begin with.
but you likely need administrators privileges to execute a delete
you still have a cpl of options depending on if you want to save anything on there or not.
you can do a system restore or recovery, whichever you prefer....and it will set it back to factory specs and put the old stuff in a separate folder that you can look over prior to deleting.

Is there a Windows 7 sticker on the bottom of the computer? You can activate with the license. You can download Windows 7 from their website, and burn it to a disk.
