i've got a toshiba satellite laptop, only a few years old. running windows 10, i5, 250gb of 500gb used. let me know what other info you might need.

we don't do much on this computer other than general web browsing, photoshop elements 14, and misc video/picture storage. it takes minuets to startup from both off and sleep and lags a lot in general while in use. i just feel like there's too much pre-loaded crap on this computer (as opposed to my work computer that's pretty much the same hardware and OS less all the pre-loaded stuff and runs much faster).

what can i do to make this thing operate reasonably fast?

please help!

If you have a strong understand of what programs you do and do not need I would do the following:

Download Revo Uninstaller.
Make a backup of your machine.
Fully uninstall anything on the computer you aren't using.
Use the Advanced Scan from Revo after each uninstall and remove any found files or registry errors.

Rinse and Repeat the above until there aren't programs you don't use on the machine.

Download CC Cleaner
Make a backup of your registry.
Run the Registry Cleaner.
Remove what it finds.
Repeat until it stops finding registry entries.

Windows 10, so open the Task manager (Can be done by pressing CTRL + SHIFT + ESC)

Select the "Startup" tab at the top of the Task manager.
Disable any startup programs.

If you are using any advanced or paid Antivirus, I would also remove that and just use Windows Defender.

Please note that all of the above are how I maintain my personal computers, but I am also very technically competent. Following these instructions blindly could cause you to disable or remove programs you might use or need for system operation.

Edit:

As many of the other posters have written, a SSD drive is an excellent way to improve the speed of your computer from a regular HHD. However, that will come at a cost and if this is a laptop, not a desktop, it will be a pain to install an internal. External SSD would be easy. Either way you'd need to move your files over and install the operating system on the new SSD.

If you are uncomfortable with the following, I would be happy to perform these services for you for a fee, which we could discuss.

This plus Glary Utilities improved my last computer a lot.

Yep, the limiting throughput factor on most computers is the hard drive. Replacing the hard drive with a solid state disk will significantly improve the performance of any computer running an old mechanical hard drive.

This, plus I would download the free version of malwarebytes and quarantine anything the scan finds and then just uninstall it after.
