I've not really frequented this board but had my home broken into yesterday and have decided I'd like to invest in some surveillance to help deter further occurrences/catch anyone trying to snoop around. I figured this would be the best spot to post this so forgive me if not.

I'd probably just need two cameras - one on the front, one on the back, and I'd like for them to be wireless (although that's not a necessity) with the ability to view/store video on the cloud or something of that nature so if someone damages/steals them or anything I can still see what happened leading up to that. Not trying to break the bank but don't mind making an investment. Any recommendations are appreciated! Thanks in advance.

netgear has what appears to be a pretty solid wireless camera system.

Wireless cameras suck for security.

That highly depends. I've got locations where it would be difficult to run Ethernet but I have power. I'm running Amcrest wireless IP cameras and haven't had any issues.

The problem with wireless is, if you don't check you feed often, you never know when it goes offline. I'm fine with using my wireless Foscam as a baby monitor, but it does have hiccups now and then. I use PoE Hikvision cams for my outside surveillance.

Well we can highly disagree. Wireless is unreliable and not secure. Plus when you look at the cost you can get a much better wired camera cheaper than a wireless.

So what're some wired cameras you'd recommend? The ability to have live access from a mobile device and also have it recording would be big bonuses.

Are you using a consumer POE switch for that, or did you somehow come across an enterprise type switch?

Like the Cubs fan mentioned I'd look into Hikvision. They are the OEM for alot of the Chinese stuff on the market.

If you are serious about the cameras for security I would have a dedicated DVR/NVR and if you go IP put the system on its own network.

I have the arlo system, and it sucks. It records everything I don't want it to, and doesn't record what I want it to

a wireless camera is no less secure than any other wireless device on your network. if your wireless network is secured with wpa2 you are good. if it isnt secured at all or you are using wep the cameras are the least of your problems.

I personally have 2 Canary base stations that I use mainly as baby monitors but they seem to be great for security cameras too. However, they are more of a "catch the criminal afterwards" type of a camera unless you're watching your phone 24/7. Then again, I guess all of them are.

The best thing is a wired system from TOCA (in the new Orleans area) or a company that can come install sensors on your windows and doors. My alarm is so loud that it literally pains my ears to the point of headache/ear bleeds if you listen to it for more than 20-30 seconds. Have them also install the wireless signal so that it's not dependent on your home WiFi. As in, if a burglar ever cuts my Cox line, it won't impact my alarm from deafening ALL of us if someone were to break in.

I originally purchased a Zyxel 8-port PoE switch (GS1900-8HP) to power the cameras and an access point. I later bought an Amcrest NV4108E NVR, which has 8 PoE ports. I haven't moved the cameras wiring over to the Amcrest yet, but I may in the future. I have a WD Purple 4TB drive in the NVR.

I had an old switch laying around so I just bought an injector for under $20.
