I build this back in 2011 or so. What should/can i upgrade. I know i most likely done have to upgrade anything as it is still beefy, but with the DDR4 memory i would have to get a new mobo for that. Should i? is it worth it? this computer runs my home media server, surveillance system, i used to play a lot of games but i have cut back on that due to time. And i also occasionally edit videos for fishing and outdoor trips. I want to consolidate some of the HDDs and get more room to set up an FTP.

that is the worst deal for an SSD that I have ever seen
Drop a drive and pick up a 2Gb video card

I would go more in this direction, personally...Not these specific ones, but you have an idea here

i bought that SSD years ago on special for like 80 bucks. Dont mind the prices. i pieced all of this together over a few months on specials and rebates.

ETA, your link is the same setup.

Guess you missed the part where he said he built it 5 years ago. The part list is just to show us what he has.

Your part list link is wrong. Gotta use the permalink.

Anyways, OP, there is nothing in that list screaming for an upgrade, unless you want to start gaming again. It's definitely not worth upgrading to Skylake (new mobo, new CPU, new RAM would run you $500+ for like a 15% gain). Are you looking to play games again? If so, tell me what you want to spend and I'll recommend a specific video card.

EDIT: Also, don't consider DDR4 to be an upgrade at all, and especially do not consider buying a new motherboard just for DDR4. However, you would need a new motherboard anyway if you were to upgrade your CPU. And if you did upgrade your CPU to Skylake, you'd have to get DDR4.

not unless i see something coming out that i want to get into. I loved playing the elder scrolls series, but i hate how all games have gone to online play. Should i just get another set of ram to fill my slots and let that take care of my urge to upgrade?

If you must. But just remember that you only need as much as you use and only use as much as you need.

Looks like you already have a nice system. Just get a better video card if you want to get into gaming at a higher level of performance. And maybe get a bigger SSD for the installation of games to also improve performance.

I'm rarely opposed to upgrading a PC, but in a lot of circumstances, those upgrades would have to be expensive to show any meaningful improvement. So, for example, a video card upgrade would be the obvious thing if you were a gamer, but that would be a ~$200 expenditure.

And if you're using upwards of 8GB of RAM, you could very well benefit from throwing another 8GB in there. I personally have 16GB of RAM. Video editing can use a lot of RAM, but only if you're using the right software. Most of the cheaper, consumer-level programs primarily rely on your storage drives to access project files. Maybe you could get a larger capacity SSD so you can store your video files on it while you're editing. A new SSD would be significantly faster than that Transcend, though you may not notice it in real-world use.

(1) He never said "here is the parts list from that build"
(2) What did the old link show you..?

The old link, before you edited, was not the permalink but a link to the main page that stores a user's part list in cookies, so it showed me the latest part list that I created for something else entirely. And it showed CarRamrod the part list he'd just created. Someone who's never been to the site would see a blank part list. The link you just posted is the correct link, copied from the permalink bar.

Are you trolling? Sometimes I have trouble figuring out who's trolling and who's really, really stupid. Because I know if I try to explain, again, why you're wrong, again, that you'd come back with more defensive nonsense. And that's something a troll would do. But it's also something a moron would do. So you see my dilemma. Or perhaps you don't.

But the thing is, all I have to do is tell people here not to listen to you, and they won't.

as long as they see you post the same information I do, its all good...

and please, feel free to point out where OP says "these are the exact parts I put in my machine"

ETA: I forget that you "do this for a living" so I'll drop it knowing that timestamps don't lie
