Help with A/V receiver UPDATE turning on cable box kills receiver WTF
Posted by Carson123987 on 8/12/15 at 11:07 am00
Yamaha RX-V367. 6-7 years old
something is triggering the protective circuitry that makes it cut itself off. after 3 tries, it shuts down permanently and I have to cut/replug power source to try again. I've checked and double checked all speaker connections and they're all solid. I got it to work fine yesterday after redoing all the connections but its all fricked up again today.
any idea what might be causing this?

what kind of environment is it in? open it up and check for heavy dust bunnies inside the unit. If they are heavy enough they can short connections triggering a fault.

is opening it as easy as it seems? with a flashlight, i see no dust

to be up front, I don't know anything about your particular mode. My Harman Kardon receive was as easy as it looks. remove the screws, and pull it out of whatever tension seal it has on it. It worked for me on my unit.

Might have a bad speaker or speaker wire.

Went to local AV place and had them test the receiver. Everything worked fine. Has to be the speakers. But even with none hooked in, it still clicked off. This is frickin weird

Definitely sounds like there is a short somewhere, but I have no idea how to find/fix it. I'd start with taking the cover off and getting in there with some canned air, then maybe getting some de-oxit spray and hitting all the connectors.
If that didn't work, I'd take it to a professional. That's about the extent of my knowledge.
Have you googled the model number to see if anyone else has had the same problem and how they fixed it?

did you try it via optical connection from the cable box? What you are suggesting is possible, but it would be a really rare failure mode. I'm just curious not to root cause.

Be sure to make them credit you for the downtime.

as of this morning, any HDMI-in connection kills the receiver when powered on - not just the cable box. i guess i just need to get a new receiver
