The thread on Vivint kind of inspired me check out what home security options are out there. A big consideration for me is no monthly fee and something that I can setup and control.

I found Piper and it seems to have a lot of positive reviews, just wondering if anybody has tried it. The home automation aspect is really cool with it...I know it wont have the level of customization as some of the Wink hub stuff CAD does on here, but it looks pretty easy. My question is, do you need to use their add-ons for the integration or will any z-wave devices work?

Are there any other good security systems out there with no monthly fee and are easy enough for my wife to use?

I have started researching new home security systems, as the one installed in our house is about 20 years old at this point. This was one of the newer ones that stood out to me. I'd rather not buy another ADT, etc. system that locks me into a contract and may or may not be upgradeable in the future.

Canary is another one similar to Piper:

Cocoon was on indiegogo, also looked interesting:

It seems like most of these are designed for apartments or smaller houses. I like the idea of taking a completely different approach to home security than what traditional systems would monitor or protect. It would be nice to have them completely integrated with other smart home systems or even new smart locks (August Lock: LINK)

I keep thinking that if I can wait a little longer, a better built home system that is based on some this is new technology linked above will come out. What I really want is for Nest to come out with a security system. I can dream, can't I?

The two things I wish piper could do is integrate into your door locks (like with schlage) and your fire alarms.

The only thing (I can tell) that Canary does is monitor air quality, but I don't think it has any of the home automation stuff.

It looks like Piper has mixed results with integrating other z-wave devices.

Simpli-safe is pretty legit. No contract, buy individual components as you need them, all connects to a hub, monitoring optional, etc. The wife and I are thinking about getting some pieces.

Monthly fee though right? Trying to avoid that, but yes simpli-safe seems like another good option.
