Google to drop Nexus brand and move away from stock Android

Google’s newest smartphones won’t be Nexus devices after all. According to Android Central, Google is dropping the Nexus branding with its two upcoming, HTC-made smartphones. Instead, the company is expected to market the devices under a different name and to lean heavily on the Google brand in the process.
This news jibes with recent rumors surrounding the upcoming devices, codenamed "Marlin" and "Sailfish." Android Police reported earlier this month that Google may strip the Nexus name from the phones and replace it with a "G" logo. It’s unclear what direction the company will take, as it has spent years fashioning the Nexus brand as a hardware entity while Google has reserved its own name for software services. We do know the two devices will come in 5-inch and 5.5-inch screen sizes, representing a small downsize from the current 5X and 6P.

This shift is more than just symbolic. The report states Google will load the devices with a special version of Android Nougat, as opposed to the standard "vanilla" version of the operating system that’s shipped on past and current Nexus devices. We don't know for sure what these changes or additions will be. But Google CEO Sundar Pichai said as much back in June, when he mentioned the company would be more "opinionated" about Nexus design. "You’ll see us hopefully add more features on top of Android on Nexus phones," he said at the Recode Code Conference. "There’s a lot of software innovation to be had."

As long as it remains open source and they keep away from preloaded bloatware I don't think the name change is significant
Nexus also has 4,5,6,7,8,9,10 device list so maybe they just wanted to avoid a bunch of future Nexus 6s names

Guessing this is a move on their end to more tightly integrate hardware and software on whatever it is they shift the Nexus name to moving forward. I've said before that both GOOG and APPL are seeing the value in moving more towards each other than attempting to differentiate at every single turn.

This is long overdue. They should have their own smartphone/tablet hardware division IMO. The only problem I see is them getting away from what attracts people to the Nexus in the first place. Pure Android. The days are over for that ending with the 6p/5x. Adding a few features exclusive to the "Google" phone like the launcher and the nav bar are cool. Going the way of locking the OS ala Apple is not the direction I want to see Google take.

At least they didn't name it the gPhone lol

Good thing. Will create a better and more unified experience on their phones. It will be the Google phone which will allow them to advertise it better I would think with more name and brand recognition. They want more unity between their software abd hardware and they are just going to add features to separate the Google phone from the rest the baseline stock Android.

So it's going the Apple route?

Makes some sense. Though Nexus is fine branding and has some value among hardcore support.
That said, I hope this is leading up to a deemphasis of the Android tag generally, as I think it holds Google back somewhat.

I think this is more branding than philosophy. I hope I'm right. If they are going the non-vanilla, bloatware route, then there's nothing to distinguish them from carrier specific phones, except maybe open source.
Google has had some growing pains since it was reorganized as Alphabet, then Google getting spun off as a brand instead of a parent. We'll see.

Yeah, it does sound like (read: I'm hopeful that) the phone is undergoing a rebranding to take the phones more mainstream. It's a good time to do so. Subsidized phones are no more, and Samsung is still trying to sell a $900 phablet with a CPU that will soon be "last year's CPU". Google phones at a couple hundred cheaper than other flagships would be appealing, better if the special version of N will have a few of those gimmicks that appeal to the broader market, and especially if the company can either partner with carriers or offer its own payment plan like Apple, since consumers are now trained to shop for phones based on monthly payments.

If they don't do the payment plan then I'm not interested

I am sure it will have a payment plan through Fi and the carriers if they sell it through them like rumored. Otherwise it may just have to be purchased outright from the Google store. The"bloatware" that is being mentioned throughout this thread will just be Google's own twist on stock android and them adding useful features. Not at all bloatware in the traditional sense like on Samsung. One such feature is swiping your finger down the back of the phone where the fingerprint scanner is to make the notification shade expand. See pic below. I think the rebranding and new direction will be great for Google and Android and if they would market it heavily I could see it doing some damage in the market. I mean people know the Google name and when they see a "Google Phone" being advertised that could catch some attention.

I'm not even sure what that means in practical terms.

they ate the patents and threw away the hardware

I figured that, but there was no context to infer what you were referring to.
