We've currently got Charter cable and Internet and the bill is getting ridiculous. I recently bought a brand new TV and while I was researching TV's I started reading about Internet TV. I bought my TV, a roku, and Apple TV. I'm trying to run 3 TV's. The Apple TV is mainly for my wife and the roku is for my son. I've got the App Store on my new tv for most of the things that I watch. We're still doing free trials on Hulu and Netflix right now to see if it's doable. I'm going to subscribe to sling TV and that should take care of a lot of my espn channels. SEC network is no problem if I pull the plug on cable because I'll just use someone else's provider and login info. For my local news, LSU games on CBS, and Fox for saints games, I'll have to get an antenna. I've tried 2 different indoor antennas with 50 mile ranges and they weren't perfect. It looks like I'll have to get an outdoor antenna. Has anyone done this before? Am I missing anything? Any suggestions on the best outdoor antennas and any must have apps for watching tv?

Why is theft always an integral part of making these things work?

Because, for some reason, this industry refuses to offer what audiences want and are willing to pay for. Their preferred model is to extract as much money as possible by forcing customers to buy a dozen things just to get the one thing they want, and people have had enough.

And an integral part of the definition of theft is that someone has to be deprived of something, and that word doesn't quite apply here. It actually fits better in describing what cable companies do to subscribers.

It's not theft. I mean it depends upon your service provider. I have Cox. They allow me to create up to 10 user e-mails that all allow login to the services I PAY FOR.. So, if I want to create usernames for these people, they can access the very few online channels. It's not like they can watch all the programming I pay for..

There is no need for them to use your main account info, you can actually make them their own.

I also pay for Amazon Prime membership. They also allow you to share your prime with a certain amount of people. Does not matter who.. I believe you can share with 2-4 people prime.. and it applies to their own account. Again, they do not even use your login to reap the benefits of the service you are paying for..

So this is actually NOT stealing. Someone is paying a premium price for such service that allows for it..

So.. nice try

If anyone is robbing anyone it is the cable companies.

They still get paid, even when we aren't home watching or not using it.

There is no difference if all the people we would share it with lived under the same household as us or if they used the service I paid for outside the house..

So say 5 people live under my house, I still pay the same amount. Now say they all move out and it's just me.. I am still paying the same amount, whether it is for 1 person, or whether it's for 5.

Like I said though, Cox allows you to make multiple accounts legally for others.. (I have even called and spoken to them about it on the phone) and you can even choose whether to allow those people authorize user status or not. That just means they can make actual changes to your account. The authorize user is not needed though to access the internet app contents such as Watchespn.. etc.

Getting back to the Amazon thing. They actually only allow you to share with 1 person. I share with my gf.

LINK

Netflix is another service that depending upon your service plan you can share with multiple people..

So it's all in how your services are set up.. but sharing does not equate stealing.. Especially not "Theft" as you mentioned. It means getting your money's worth and taking full advantage of what you pay for.

I am still paying the same amount, whether it is for 1 person, or whether it's for 5. If we aren't at the house to reap the benefits of the large bill I pay why shouldn't we be allowed to reap it outside the house? We are.. That is the whole point of it. This is why I even validate still keeping Cox and paying for it. They can still use "some" of those services. Keep in mind it's still very limited.. What if they were paying me a portion to use my access which then went to a grouping of paying for my bill.. or if I just wanted to pay the full amount but still get my money's worth by sharing my services. Whether it's used or not, someone is still paying for the cable service.

Like I said though, Cox allows you to make multiple accounts legally for others.. (I have even called and spoken to them about it on the phone) and you can even choose whether to allow those people as authorize user status or not. That just means they can make actual changes to your account or billing. The authorize user is not needed though to access internet related content such as Watchespn.. etc.

Add users to your Cox account

Getting back to the Amazon thing. They actually only allow you to share with 1 person. I share with my gf. Prime does not allow their video to be shared though, but their shipping benefits can be. I respect that.

Netflix is another service that depending upon your service plan you can share with multiple people.. The CEO of netlfix has come and said it is not prohibited, but they don't like people to just get the info from a second hand party member.

So it's all in how your services are set up.. but sharing does not equate stealing.. Especially not "Theft" as you mentioned. It means getting your money's worth and taking full advantage of what you pay for.

Shoprunner allows me to share my benfits with up to four people.

MLB.tv for example, has a strictly prohibited stance on sharing, so I also respect that.

If I want to share my internet's WIFI and I pay for my internet and went out to get an expensive router, depending upon the wording of the service I use.. it is either allowed or not allowed. Some internet contracts actually encourage the shared usage of the wi-fi connection. This is a SELLING point as to buying into that particular company's contract.. It all depends on what type of contract you have with your wi-fi company.

FWIW, I do not share my wifi though and keep it protected now. I once kept it open. Just mentioning this for sharing wifi for more principle.

I can't imagine not having a DVR in 2015. Godspeed.

I prefer simplicity and right now, cable tv is the simple solution. I don't want to have to "install kodi", sprinkle some magic pixi dust on a box, pee in a can, swirl it around, stand on 1 leg and then throw the pee over my shoulder just so I can DVR 1 station at a time.

That's just my 2 cents. Until there's a cheaper, easier, simpler solution... ATT Uverse will continue to get my money.

It is true going without cable is for people with a bit of technical ability and/or the desire to spend a couple of hours teaching yourself. But it is pretty simple. My Windows Media Center DVR which I have integrated with KODI can record 16 shows at one time I believe. But most any TV show is available on demand w/ no commercials on KODI so you really dont need a DVR.
