Which one? My price range is $600

Im getting into hiking and backcountry hunting so Im wanting a gps watch to help

My main need is to get me back to my starting point. breadcrumb style service where I can mark a start, tag POI and then get me back along the same route. Both have that.

Step counter, and other info on hike would be cool(elevation change, average speed etc)

Im simple so the interface of Suunto is fine although I admit the Garmin looks nice.
I also like the look of the Suunto traverse alpha stealth mode over the Garmin.

leaning suunto at the moment

I think that about covers everything.
Anyone with advise on either or both?

Would this be better on OT?

Had the Fenix 3 and was a bit underwhelmed. I was wanting a bit more out of the apps, but if your looking for nav, fitness etc, it's pretty sweet. I was coming from an Apple Watch so comparing the apps was not really fair.

I have an original Suunto Ambit HR. I've had a pretty good experience with it. It has been used many years and it is still rolling along well, just a little beat up.

I don't know about the new watches but I can say the only reason I've heard people complain about Suunto is the time it takes to develop their software and keep it up to date. Usually something about being a little behind Garmin in new features. On the other hand I've heard general complaints about the Garmin software too.

Keep in mind this is from reading a couple years back when I was considering a new device. Lots of good info here if you want to dig further. LINK /

ETA - The Movescount software has done everything I've needed. Never messed with additional apps or pairing to my phone. Main uses are trekking, running, climbing, cycling.

I own the Garmin Fenix 3 and previously had a Suunto Core. I actually loved both but the ONLY reason I stick to my Fenix 3 is I workout at the gym every day. The multiple activities from running, cycling, and regular weight lifting exercise tracking that the Fenix 3 does is second to none.

However, if you main or only purpose is hiking, I'd say go with the Suunto Traverse Alpha. It appears to be focused on that and that means less watch clicks and menu scrolling to do what you want/need.

Don't know what I'd do without my Fenix 3. Been to hell and back with me over the last few years. Love it.

Welp bought the suunto
Should be here Thursday then I'm going hiking Sunday to test the features.

I will bump with my results and if I have problems I'll ask you if the Fenix can do it better. So keep an eye out for the bump

wanted to bump this.

the fenix 5 reviews came out today and gave me a solid chub. how did you feel about your ambit purchase?

i'm honestly leaning towards a forerunner 235 for simplicity's sake but that fenix 5 is so sexy i'm willing to get yelled at by my wife over it.
